Meanwhile,
the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer
to David. He looked David over and
saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and
he despised him. (1 Samuel 17:41-42)
This
Bible story is one which maybe was the origin of the saying, "Don't judge
a book by its cover." Looks are so often deceiving; we judge
someone's competence by his or her appearance. Too many of us have gone through
life with the preconceived notion we are no good. Others have looked us up and
down and concluded we are not worthy of a second glance.
Goliath
encountered a young shepherd boy and came to this very conclusion on the
morning of is ultimate demise. He underestimated what this lad was capable of
because of whose he was. We should not make the same mistake. We should never
underestimate the power and the provision of our Great God.
The
power of prayer is a mighty weapon every Christian has at their
disposal. David said to the Philistine, “You
come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you
in the name of the Lord Almighty,
the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (1 Samuel
17:45)
A
valuable life lesson for us is that God hears our prayers and He answers them.
David's victory over the giant gives testimony to this. He took off the
heavy armor of battle and He faced down Goliath wearing a covering of
prayer. When we come face to face with our monsters, we need only call upon the
LORD as David did.
1 Samuel 17:41-51
