Matthew 5:13-16

My dog, Asa, and I were walking one of our routes today and I found trash strewn on the road. It seemed like someone had deliberately thrown it out of their car window. There was a pizza box, a Subway wrapper, Dairy Queen Cups and a Wal-Mart plastic bag. I was appalled that someone would dare mar this beautiful country side with their garbage. So, on the return trek, I picked up the Wal-Mart bag and proceeded to gather up the offending debris, returning the roadway to its original pristine state.

As I was reviewing the scripture for today's devotional I thought about this experience today. At first I was disgusted with the behavior of people, the total lack of respect for others and for nature. Then I tried to justify their actions but couldn't. Finally I realized it was up to me to do something about it. Finding a common thread from the trash to the lesson today may seem a stretch to some reading this, but it was obvious to me.

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

As a Christian, I am to be the salt of the earth. As a disciple of Jesus I am to be a preservative in this world, not conforming to worldly behavior. It is not up to me to condemn the actions of the litterer; it is up to me to do the next right thing--pick up the trash and pray for the offenders. When I practice being salt and light when no one sees me, perhaps practice will make perfect and my actions will reflect my heart when others might notice.

John 8:12-30

Is it only children who are afraid of the dark? Even grown-ups grow timid when the lights are out; even adults walk slower and step lightly when darkness surrounds their path. And what it is about the dark that makes us fearful?

What does light do for us that darkness does not? If you have ever been in the woods, somewhere far away from the city, one of the first things you will notice is how dark it gets at night. There are no city lights, no street lights, to provide illumination, it is just plain black. The first thing we do is get out the flashlights or stoke up the campfire. We are seeking the safety only light will provide. When there is light we step with confidence. When there is light we do not fear the imaginary life form waiting in the darkness.

"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

The Believer is confident when he steps out in faith because he has the Light of the World exposing the darkness around him and his path is made clear. We can see where we are going and we can easily see the One we are following. When the storms of life cause the power to go out, we can still maneuver because we have the Light of Life to guide us. When crisis causes us to misstep as if in darkness, we only need open our eyes and lift our heads toward the heavens.

John 1:1-14

The following verses are some of the most poetic lines in Scripture. Having just finished the Christmas season the meaning of these Words ring familiar. Monday we read in the first chapter of Genesis, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Today we are called to the beginning once again where we discover in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1-5 (NIV) reads like bullet points / a parallel with Genesis 1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

Can you identify when God became real to you? Do you know when the Word became real to you? I recognized there was a God early in life, as a very young child. Like many children do, I grew up and found myself in a place where I still believed, but that belief meant nothing to me, until, someone allowed themselves to be used by God to reach me. Has this happened to you? Is this a story you should be telling so as to impact someone else with the Good News?

Everyday is a day to proclaim the Gospel; to tell some one about the light that shines in your life. There are many ways to do this, and today is the day to begin. No one is guaranteed a tomorrow.

Isaiah 9:1-7

Over the past year or so I have been struck by the many times I have read in various devotionals or studies, of the value of struggles. Lessons are taught about how rich our faith life becomes after experiencing pain and sorrow. We are told to "consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you experience trials of many kinds" (James 1:2) I can open my journal and easily find notes about time of testing. One entry read, "Real maturity is never the result of a single experience."

"Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan —"(Isaiah 9:1)

I love the book of Isaiah and am almost always assured of great words of wisdom when I dive into a chapter and this one is no exception. When we are in the midst of a cloud, when life is overwhelming us and we can't seem to catch our breath, Isaiah is telling us the Lord may not spare us from troubles, but if we follow Him wholeheartedly, He will see us through them.

Personally, I know this to be true. I feel my faith is stronger now, more real, not just something I feel, but something I live. Having witnessed some of the miracles in the season of my husband's illness and death, I know that Jesus is real and that He is love. The Lord did not spare me that pain, but He did see me through those dark days and even blessed me with memories I will hold forever.

Genesis 1:1-19

I love these two verses and find them to be warm and hope-filled. These lines paint a picture of a God who loves and has cared about everything since before creation. The Holy Spirit was introduced to us right in the beginning, "...The Spirit of God was hovering..."

There are days and even seasons in my life when I appreciate the fact I can draw up a God who cares and especially one who 'hovers'. Knowing that the Holy Spirit is nearby, encourages me to hunker down and take advantage of His presence. I have called upon Him many times in the past 12 months, and He is faithful to hear me and to help me.

Many teens have parents who hover and they become irritated at the unwanted attention from a parent who may be viewed as over protective. These situations usually occurred just when the young person wants to spread their wings and fly. The last thing wanted is a parent's watchful eye.

What are you going through right now where you need a God who 'hovers'? I may have rejected my parents attempts to protect me, but I am wise enough now to realize that is just what I want from my God.

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." (Genesis 1:1-20)

1Corinthians 15:12, 16-28, 51-58 New Life

Sometimes the words in the bible are so deep and confusing I find myself re-reading again and again so I can get it through my thick skull. It often doesn’t work, but then if I read on, I find clarity. That’s kind of what happened today, as I read our passage in 1 Corinthians. I got it, then I didn’t, then I did again for a while, but then I didn’t. Whew! Please read it in its entirety below and see if the same thing happens to you.

Though as human beings we do not have the ability to grasp the "realm of the unknown where Jesus is," here is my attempt:
As Christ followers, we believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead, to save us from the sin we all incurred due to Adam and Eve’s disobedience. (Eve wasn’t mentioned, but she was surely in on it.) This sin means death, unless we overcome and walk away from the things of this world toward the truth of God’s word. We must stand firm, and give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord. The end will come and in Christ we will be made alive. We will be changed. There will be no real death, but instead new life. Labor for the Lord is never in vain.

Though I fully understand there is more substance and meaning weaved within the letters and words upon the pages of this tremendous book, we all still come to it from our own place. What other wisdom, direction, or peace do you find within these passages? Seek and you will find.

1 Corinthians 16:1-24

How do we do everything in love? Two words come to mind when pondering this question; motive and attitude. Dictionary.com defines these two words this way.

Motive is something that causes me to act in a certain way, do a certain thing.
Attitude is manner, disposition, feeling, position, with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind: a negative attitude.

We might hear a child say, "It was an accident, I didn't mean to do it." Sometimes when speaking to God we say the same thing. Our conscience may be convicting us of a wrong doing, and a prompting to make amends pushes us to act with a contrite heart. When my heart is in the right place and my motives pure, but my actions didn't live up to my intentions.

There was a time when my attitude was not the best, I would allow some one else's actions affect my attitude for the day. For example, if I were cut off in traffic and experienced a close call, that action could make me crabby the rest of the day. Getting off on the wrong foot would make look at the day as a lost cause and it had barely begun.

Paul is teaching us to be on our guard, to stay close to Jesus. My motives and my attitude change when I stand firm each day. Sensing a closeness to Jesus give me a new and fresh faith every day, it gives me courage and strength I didn't know was possible. I not only can do everything in love - I want to. This sounds awfully simple, and it is.

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love."
(1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

1 Corinthians 15:35-59

Satan seemed to be victorious in the Garden of Eden and at the Cross of Jesus. But all that changed when Jesus rose from the dead; when His purpose on earth was fulfilled and we were redeemed. We may have days when it feels like Satan is winning, but just hang on for a bit and things will become clearer. Stay close to God and call upon the Holy Spirit and it will soon become obvious we have hope beyond the grave.

Life is difficult and just because we are Believers we are not blessed with easier times, as some might think. The non-believer might question why someone who Believes and serves God and others, who is well respected and thought of as one to fashion your life after, suddenly one day is in a boat load of trouble. Their life may appear to be falling apart, perhaps an addiction had a strong hold on them.

How can this happen to someone who believes so strongly, who was so faithful for years? Christians find themselves under attack daily. While the Christian's salvation may be assured, Satan wants to invalidate their testimony. If he can tarnish your story, gives others reason to doubt the value of a relationship with Jesus, you can bet your bottom dollar Satan will be all over that. He is the great deceiver.

1 Corinthians 15:54-57 (NIV) When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."

"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Praise God, we no longer need fear death/Satan

1 Corinthians 15:20-34

Isaiah 22:13 (NIV)
But see, there is joy and revelry, slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine! "Let us eat and drink," you say, "for tomorrow we die!"
The motto of the world seems to be, "Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die." I never would have guessed this thinking came from Scriptures. I remember my father making this statement, raising his glass high. Perhaps many of us live there is no tomorrow. This is why, for me, there was a major attitude adjustment when I came to faith in Jesus, in the Resurrection.

This adage is flawed because if the entire verse were recited everyone would understand the meaning. "If the dead are not raised," precedes "Eat, drink..." If Jesus had not come to us, if He had not sacrificed His life for ours, then there would be no reason to stifle the party today. There would be nothing to live for so we might as well enjoy the moment. But...

Fortunately there here is a 'but' to give us hope and motivation to do the next right thing. We are dying everyday, tomorrow is not guaranteed for us on this earth, but tomorrow is promised in Heaven. This is the goal, the prize, the reason for our hope.

1 Corinthians 15:30-32 (NIV) And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour?
I die every day--I mean that, brothers--just as surely as I glory over you in Christ Jesus our Lord.
If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for merely human reasons, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die."

1 Corinthians 15:1-19

Chapter 15 of 1 Corinthians is reinforcing the importance of the Resurrection to all Christians. It is all boiled down to three main points:

Christ died for our sins just as the Scriptures said
Christ was buried
Christ rose again on the third day just as the Scriptures said

The doctrine of Christ's death and resurrection is the foundation of Christianity. Many of us believe these truths and embrace them daily, but I have found a new meaning in since experiencing the loss of my husband. The fact that I know he is with Jesus and that I will be also reinforces my faith and gives me a peace filled with joy. This knew understanding has also made me more aware of the duty we all have to share the Good News with others.

If someone had not shared the story of Jesus with my husband everything would be different. That puts a burden on my heart to do the job I have been called to. I remember a few years ago being so influenced by a pastor who also happened to be my boss. He always spoke of his heart for the lost - and it rubbed off on me. It was so obvious that his heart broke when he would think of someone not knowing and accepting Jesus into their life. I wanted a heart like that...I want a heart like that.

"Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:1-2)

1 Corinthians 14:26-40

If everyone was courteous and considerate in everything, would there be any problems in the world? This scenario seems to be the answer to all the conflict and skirmishes in life. "Love your neighbor as yourself" - the second greatest command would be second nature in a world that was courteous and considerate in everything.

We are sinful, so this is not going to happen in this lifetime, but it is something to strive for. Practice makes perfect and by the time God welcomes us to His kingdom we will be ready for perfection and righteousness. When we get to Heaven we will bring love with us, but I was reminded that we will also bring our memories, experiences and our scars. Isn't that an interesting thought? How does that make you feel?

The more I think about this the more I feel like Heaven is going to be so exciting, wonderful and explosive. I think that I will be me, not some unreal being who is starting all over again now that I have reached Heaven. I think that I will now be able to move forward and not get hung up on things this world calls ' acceptable'. Love is the magic word and it is peppered throughout Scripture. Every lesson has something to do with love.

"Be courteous and considerate in everything." (1 Corinthians 14:40)

LOVE trumps everything - 1 Corinthians 14:1-25

Traveling to a foreign country where one does not speak nor understand the language is scary at best. The times I went to Honduras I felt off kilter when put into a situation where I was one on one with a local and could not communicate. I could not make them understand my needs nor could they tell me what they wanted. It wasn't until our translator arrived that I began to relax and even enjoy the time spent there.

It makes sense then that Paul is telling the followers about Spiritual Gifts and namely the gift of speaking in tongues. His instructions are that it is better to use the gift of prophecy than to speak in tongues. Speaking in tongues is a personal gift, meant for the user, but prophecy is preaching and/or teaching. This is a gift everyone can profit from and be comfortable with. I can appreciate how the Message Bible puts it in 1 Corinthians 14:1-3:

"Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it—because it does. Give yourselves to the gifts God gives you. Most of all, try to proclaim his truth. If you praise him in the private language of tongues, God understands you but no one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and him. But when you proclaim his truth in everyday speech, you're letting others in on the truth so that they can grow and be strong and experience his presence with you."

Once again we are reminded of the importance of love. Other versions of the Bible open with eagerly pursue love. Only then do the words go on to explain speaking in tongues. Sharing the Good News is our charge and the way we love our neighbors as ourselves.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Tempted Yet Standing
“God never gives you more than you can handle.”
Really? There have times in my life when I have questioned that. How about you?
More than once I have been to the end of a rope I was sure was frayed beyond repair. I was slipping fast, with no knot at the end to keep me from falling. Little did I know that a knot was not what I needed. Sadness, despair, loneliness, helplessness, hopelessness, frustration, grief, grief beyond words, emptiness, anxiety, depression, worthlessness, hate, shame, pain, embarrassment, guilt.

Corinthians 10 is titled Warnings From Israel’s History. It reminds us of all the things that happened to men because of their behaviors. It makes mention of the horrific fate that came to those who were sexually immoral, who engaged in pagan revelry, many who grumbled, and still others who tested the Lord. Verse eleven states; “These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall.”

I see now that He has strengthened me by seeing me through a childhood of neglect, a midlife of crisis and turmoil, and later years of blessings mixed with sorrow that enabled me to support the rest of the family when our oldest son took his own life.

We are all tempted, we all make mistakes. We all fall short, but if we heed the warnings of the Lord, and trust that he will not give us more than we can handle, we will remain strong. It is when we trust in things of this world that we become weak. ……”And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide you a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

1 Corinthians 12:12-13:13

Yesterday we were told about Spiritual Gifts and how we all have at least one; how each Christian is given special gifts by the Holy Spirit to use for the good of the Community of Believers. Today's words enforce that teaching and take it a step further.

It seems every time we get into a lesson we are reminded about LOVE. All the gifts we have, all the ways in which we use these gifts mean nothing if our motive isn't pure. That motive cannot be personal gain or popularity, but love. Paul teaches the Corinthians and he teaches us, the specific gifts we have is not as important as the way in which these gifts are exercised. Gifts are nothing without love.

"Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal." (1 Corinthians 12:31-13:1)

Love is greater even than faith and hope. Love is the most excellent way. Think about it, when have you been the happiest? When have you felt great sadness? For me, love was the common factor. The hardest commandment God has given us is to love. The most difficult request God has made of us is to love. The most difficult expectation God has of us is for us to love. The greatest challenge God has given us is the challenge found in loving.

Randy Alcorn's, in his book, Heaven, says that the only thing we will take with us to Heaven is our love. That is a powerful statement and one that I find thrilling to ponder.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11

Sometimes we forget how special we are; how vital our lives are to those around us. Before I became a follower of Jesus I would often question why I was born. I did not feel useful or needed in this world. Until God gets hold of us, until our relationship with Jesus begins to strengthen and the Holy Spirit fills us, it is natural to have these feelings. The Spiritual Gifts we are blessed with change our lives forever. They change the lives of those around us as well.

Every Christian is given special gifts by the Holy Spirit to use for the good of the Community of Believers. There are no exceptions; some of us have more than one gift. Do you know what your Spiritual Gift is/are? Do you enjoy teaching? Perhaps you are one of those special people who send notes to people thanking them for things they do. This is the sign of an encourager. Do you enjoy serving, especially in the background, working diligently on a project or ministry? This is the gift of helps.

Maybe your forte is planning events and leading people, you may have been gifted with administration or leadership. Perhaps you haven't figured out what your gift is and you are waiting for it to be revealed. No need, jump right in and begin serving - you will know soon enough. I have found that my gifts are also my passion. I would not feel complete if I were not able to serve within the area of my passion.

"God's various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit. God's various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit. God's various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful" (1 Corinthians 12:4-11 MSG)

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

Merriam-Webster defines communion as an act or instance of sharing; a synonym is fellowship. I must admit that I do not remember ever reading today's passages before. Does that ever happen to you? I am sure I have, for I have been in 1 Corinthians often over the years, but for some reason it wasn't until this week I studied these particular verses.

Paul is telling the Believers at Corinth that observing the Communion feast is a big deal. He is reprimanding them for approaching the meal while their hearts were not right with God or with one another. Communion is all about unity, sharing, fellowship and love. The practice of the people in Corinth would be to come together for a meal first - the rich would bring lavish dishes to be shared among other wealthy believers, often leaving the poor to go hungry.

"For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25)

Paul admonished their behavior instructing that Communion is about coming together, about remembering Jesus and all He taught; the most important lesson being love. The Sundays when the Communion Feast is celebrated is a special time. I enjoy sharing this moment with fellow Believers. It is always a special time when I am able to partake of this observance with people who mean so much to me. I had to learn this though, just as the early church had to learn to real meaning of sharing in The Lord's Supper.

1 Corinthians 11:2-16

What are you thinking of when reading the Words set aside for us today? I would love to be a mouse in the corner listening in on the conversations this passage will evoke. Why is head covering of lack of head covering an issue? What can possibly be the reason for this teaching?

I was raised Catholic and attended Catholic grade school. Every morning we attended Mass and as a girl, I was required to wear something on my head. It was important enough to us that I would not dream of entering the church without a scarf or hat or even a handkerchief covering my head. I never questioned it as a child, but now I wonder…why?

We have been learning about relationships in 1 Corinthians; relationships with God and with one another. We have been instructed as to proper behavior for a Christian, appropriate ways in which to conduct ourselves. We are being taught about obedience. For me this passage is all about humbling myself and becoming totally committed to Christ. Often that will mean I must not be a stumbling block for someone else. It may mean too that I need to trust and obey Scripture.

“Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.” (1 Corinthians 11:13-15)

A woman covering her head in the Temple was custom, a man not covering his head was custom. Why cause a stir and give a new Believer cause to doubt? Today, it is not custom, so to wear or not to wear a something on my head in Church is not an issue, but obedience and humility are still valid matters. Whether I have long or short hair is not a societal concern, but trust in God and believing His Word remains a follower’s lifelong pursuit.

Lesson: Christian men and women should conduct themselves in a respectful, orderly way not only in worship but also in daily life.

1 Corinthians 10:14-11:1

This past year has been an eye-opener for me. I never thought of myself as one to worship anything but God. Then my husband died and my life became unstable. I found myself fearful because the anchor and the security I felt were no longer with me. I discovered my idol was financial security.

Idolatry, a serious problem even today, takes a different form than in Paul's time. We don't put our trust in statues of wood and stone but in paper money and plastic cards. But, we get into the same trouble the Corinthian people did. We face God's displeasure. The Bible teaches putting our trust in anything but God is idolatry. What is a modern day idol for you? When we recognize those things we put before God we can begin to understand Paul's words to "flee from the worship of idols".

"Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf." (1 Corinthians 10:14-17)

My devotional reading each day challenge me to accept the fact that I am made stronger through trials, my faith grows when heartache and pain enter my life. I resisted this concept for months, enjoying the occasional pity party as I allowed the loss of my husband and then my idol (security) to imprison my happiness. I was shackled by chains of fear and doubt. Slowly, God has been revealing to me that He is all I need. His grace is sufficient for me. Is there an idol in your life?

Learn from past mistakes - 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Young children are constantly learning. It doesn't take too long for a baby to discover a loud cry will bring mom or dad to their side. Children learn early to blow on their oatmeal before putting a big spoonful in the mouth, or don't surprise the cat or it may result in a scratch.

"Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness." (1 Corinthians 10:5)

Adults learn from mistakes too, we know it isn't smart to go boating without wearing a life vest, it is best to stick to the speed limit or to be cautious when walking through a construction site. Our entire lives are like books filled with lessons and learning episodes. These chapters in our life teach us how to approach tomorrow so we do not injure ourselves.

"So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be temptedbeyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." (1 Corinthians 10:12-13)

The Israelites had many lessons over the course of forty years spent roaming the dessert. They followed Moses through the Red Sea; they were led every day by a cloud and every night by a pillar of fire. God presented them with opportunity after opportunity to learn from their past mistakes. He provided everything they needed for survival while Moses led them toward the Promised Land. But, few entered the place God intended for them. Few came to enjoy God's reward.

The Israelites are the chosen people, we are called too. It is wise to learn from mistakes. Many are called but few are chosen. (Matthew 22:14) Our Promised Land is Heaven and we are called to spend eternity there.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Sexual impurity. Our children and teens are subjected to it on a regular basis. We are bombarded with it on the television, in music, on the internet, and nearly everywhere we turn. Parents today have an incredible job before them protecting, sheltering, and educating their offspring on the dangers lurking amidst us all. Without the bible and God’s words to guide them, they haven’t got a chance?

Had my husband and I not gotten our children connected with a Bible based church community during their early teen years, I don’t for a minute believe they would have been able to make the positive moral choices they have. It was not my doing; it was the WORD OF THE LORD that made the difference.

Today’s passage is titled, “Sexual Immorality.” It is a serious and important topic, goes far deeper than what we imagine it to be on the surface. It is not just about staying away from immoral sexual acts. It is regarding how to view our lives so we don’t even consider going there!

When we unite with another, we become one. Genesis 2:24 states “The two will become one flesh.” Today’s passage tells us that as God’s children we are united with Him. “But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in spirit.” Later it says, “Do you know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?” If we believe that God is with us, that means all the time. He is not just with us when we’re being “good.” Should we not live our lives as though he’s right here, all the time? And not just beside us, but within us. Immanuel means

GOD WITH US… always.

1 Corinthians 9:1-27

Do you like to run? People who are avid runners get to a point in their regime when they acquire a natural high. These athletes push themselves until they reach this stage and endorphins take over and the run becomes energizing, fun even. I am not speaking from experience, I have been told this by those who use this discipline to accomplish a level of physical fitness I could only dream of attaining.

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever." (1 Corinthians 9:24-25)

Discipline is a key word in today's scriptures. Discipline is also a word that is a struggle for me. I would love to be disciplined in my eating habits, in my journal entries, my Bible reading and in my life in general. Paul is trying to teach the people of Corinth to exercise discipline in everyday living. He uses the familiar example of runners to make his point.

The goal is to win, to win the prize and not be disqualified in the process. We must train and strain to attain the reward. When we cross the finish line and break through the tape stretched across our path, the prize is life with Jesus.

1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Jesus' appearance in this world delivered mankind from death. The Messiah's purpose was to redeem our sins and wash us clean so that we could gain entry to Heaven and live eternally in glorious bliss. Before Jesus, blood had to be shed, the blood of the best animal owned, in order for atonement to occur. Jesus became that sacrifice, He is the Lamb of God, and it was His blood that changed everything.

Today, it is difficult to read this text and understand how it applies to us today. Christians do not worship idols any longer, or do we? Idols are everywhere if we are honest with ourselves. I recognize that there are times I allow something of this world, something I really enjoy and feel entitled to, to pull me away from the task Jesus has set aside for me.

The words in our reading today are applicable for us today. The message I am hearing is Love Your Neighbor. The lesson I am taking away is that my neighbor, my unbelieving neighbor, needs to feel my love. He knows that I am Christian, he sees me leaving the house every Sunday morning and going to a Worship service. This is the example I make on Sunday morning. The question now is what are the examples this same neighbor will witness Monday through Saturday?

"But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat and no better if we do." (1 Corinthians 8:8)
"Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak." (1 Corinthians 8:9)

This is what it boils down to for me. Do not allow our behaviors - even if they are permissible - to become stumbling blocks to those who are new to the faith.

1 Corinthians 7:17-40

God can and will use us right where we are today. We do not need to move, change jobs, find new friends, hang out in different places to be used in a mighty way. There are at least four bullet points to be pulled from the twenty-three verses for today.

Keeping God's commands is what counts (verse 19)
You were bought at a price (verse 23a)
Do not become slaves of men (verse 23b)
For this world in its present form is passing away (verse 31b)

Each of these one-liners is worthy of its own devotional and each one could stand alone in a study group. For our purposes let's just dive in and see what happens. We are called to share the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When we do this, we are keeping His commands. Jesus' death on the cross was the steep price paid for our salvation. His death and our freedom from the consequence of sin is all the reason we need to stay free of the constraints of sin and become slaves to Christ.

Life is short, at least life on this earth. Material things are not important, but if we have been blessed with wealth we should use it to promote good and further God's Kingdom. I am learning that all I have is not mine, but a gift from God which I am allowed to use. Stewardship is a word we seldom use, but one on which parables have been taught by Jesus himself. Life is short, don't get too attached to it.

"Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them." (1 Corinthians 7:17)

1 Corinthians 7:1-16

God wants to use us to influence others to believe. We read over and over again of the importance of our testimony. Our testimony isn't only the story of the big changes God has made in our lives, but it is also how we approach every day. We live out our story day in and day out as we encounter people where they are. A trip to the grocery store, the bank or the Department of Motor Vehicles offers us the opportunity to share our story. Our actions speak louder than words; we have many chances to make someone's day better by our attitude or lack of attitude as the case may be.

The scripture today reveals this through a different light. We are instructed to be equally yoked, meaning a Christian should not marry a non-believer. But, when two non-believers marry and one of them accepts Christ into their hearts, the Word tells us this is an opportunity to witness. Our actions could bring the unbelieving spouse to accepting Christ. The word sanctified means: holy, consecrated, blessed.

"To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband." (1 Corinthians 7:12-14)

Our witness to the world changes lives; how we act in everyday situations is important. We must always remember that we are being watched; by God and by our neighbors.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20

A number of years ago my niece visited for a few weeks during the summer break. Before she returned home I wanted to take her shopping for an outfit for school. I was planning to make it a fun time, shopping and having lunch and just hanging out together. This expedition turned into an eye opening experience that caused me to re-examine my values.

I knew from television programs and the lack of appropriate movies to go to that society was hung up on the rich and famous, but I had been sheltered enough to be shocked at the lack of modest attire for a girl in her early teens. We spend the better part of a day searching the stores and never did find an outfit I thought her mother might approve of.

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." (1 Corinthians 6:9-20)

This is the history repeating itself. Reading the stories about Corinth in Paul's letters we learn that sexual immorality was a way of life. The early church taught against such behavior and preached that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. This was true 2000 years ago and it is true today. We are called to glorify God with our bodies.

Love thy neighbor - 1 Corinthians 6:1-11

Do you have trouble getting along with people? Most of us do not as a rule, but perhaps once in a while we will disagree with someone's opinions or actions. How do you settle tensions in a relationship? Do you avoid dealing with a difficult situation and live in denial that anything is amiss?

I think we all, at one time in our lives, struggle with a difficult personality. This may be a family member, a co-worker or a neighbor or an acquaintance. Any one of us could be that disagreeable personalty as well. We all have bad days or weeks. There are times when the issue could be more serious, a time when we need the intercession of someone else to help us mend the break. Scripture encourages us, as believers, to heal the rift without taking our Christian brother to court where a non-believer has authority,

"If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?" (1 Corinthians 6:1)

The issue here isn't who we turn to for help in these difficult times but rather what is the example we are setting for the world. Paul's words go on, "The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?" (1 Corinthians 6:7) We are being called to get along with one another. Paul is reaffirming the need to stop any division in the church and love our brother.

Like most of the teaching in the Bible this is all contrary to our human nature, proving Heaven is an upside down world. Oh, how we long for those topsy turvy times.

Power Through Weakness

1 Corinthians 1:17-2:5

We all want to make a difference in this world. We hope to leave our mark upon society in some way that is relevant. When the day comes that we pass on, we hope that kind words will be said about us at our memorial service. We want to be remembered as unique, in whatever way is important to us as individuals. This brings to mind the concept of a headstone and how the dates of birth and death are not the significant part, but the dash in between those dates. The question is: "How did you live your dash?"

So many of us feel as though we have to do something BIG, to be significant enough to matter. Others think accumulating a great deal of money or assets will mean success. Still others focus on just striving to be happy. God tells us that the meek shall inherit the earth, and he always calls on the most unlikely to do his work. There are so many, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus into the world, Jesus' disciples, simple fishermen and laborers became fishers of men, Goliath brought down the giant, Noah, built the ark........ none of these men were influential, noble, or wise by human standards. God uses the weak to lead, the sick to demonstrate courage, children remind us all what is truly important.

No matter who we are, or what this world has molded us into, we are all the same in the eyes of the Lord. We may feel insignificant and weak, but we are relevant and powerful. We may flounder in our own problems and predicaments, but we have the ability to do great things through and because of our trials. We are all here to make a difference, from right where we are. Jesus has shown us the way!

1 Corinthians 5:1-13

Tolerance and rationalization are words that beg to be defined in the text for today. The topic is sexual sin and the destruction it can cause in the Community of Believers. This was a common sin in Corinth, and it is a common sin today. Why? Is this a case of history repeating itself and following in the same dangerous path of those who have gone before us?

There are many questions for me as I read this chapter. A buzz word for the past few years has been tolerance; we are to tolerate bad behavior or be considered hypocrites. Society encourages that we not call sin out, but allow those whose behavior is shocking at best, to rationalize their behavior.

Christians are to care for and love one another. We are not to turn a blind eye to improper and immoral behavior when it occurs within the Body of Believers. We are called to correct each other's behavior, to encourage repentance and remorse. Like the one rotten apple in the barrel that eventually affects all the others, it must be removed.

"What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. Expel the wicked person from among you.” (1 Corinthians 5:12-13)

Tough love is just that, tough. It is tough to face and even tougher to follow through with; but the rewards are plentiful when the offender recognizes his/her sin and repents. Unlike the rotten apple that had to be destroyed, the repentant believer can return to the Body. “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” (Luke 15:7)

1 Corinthians 4:6-21

Paul certainly had his work cut out for him. The new church in Corinth was struggling, much like our churches today struggle. Gossip and pride ran rampant. One of the first things I had to deal with as a new believer was my habit of gossip. Why do we do this; because we need to feel superior and important? So, what that means is those who thrive on gossip are feeding their own inferiority complexes at the expense of others.

"Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other. 7 For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?" (1 Corinthians 4:6-7)

No one has any right to boast about anything. No one is better than anyone else. God sent His Son to save everyone, not just certain special people. No one is more special than his neighbor. So, if I am Christian why do I sometimes feel superior to others? I not only feel superior, I act that way as well. I am reminded of the words of Rick Warren in The Purpose Driven Life, “It is not all about me.” Once I get over myself and my self-importance life will be sweeter and I will love my neighbor as myself. The Golden Rule applies today too.

1 Corinthians 3:1-4:5

There is much going on in these verses and I find it difficult to zero in on which to address here today. We have the message of preparing to receive solid food in place of milk. We are to grow up, learn about God and practice to live as adults, knowledgeable in the ways of the world of Jesus; not depending on worldly men such as Apollos or Paul. These men are good men, they disciple the people, but they are not God.

“Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly.” (1 Corinthians 3:1-3)

Paul tells how he planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. Now you are talking my language. Once I began to cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus, I began to understand about hope and peace; two things I did not possess before. Once I began to live as one who was saved, comprehending the value of living in peace. Simple things began to interest me, things I never recognized as gifts from God for me to enjoy.

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7)

One summer I decided to start a flower garden, one which would yield beautiful flowers for me to cut and bring inside and also share with others. Flowers bring smiles to all faces. My neighbors and co-workers of all ages loved receiving a small arrangement of color and fragrance to grace their desk or counter-top. God opened my eyes that summer; then He opened my heart to sharing His gift of summer delight in a vase.

“For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3:9)

What I am trying to say is God will grow us if we take the time to plant the seed and do some watering.

1 Corinthians 2:6-16

The Scripture reading for today is like a lesson on the Holy Spirit and wisdom. I learned as a new believer I only had to call upon the Holy Spirit and ask for wisdom and it would be available to me. Perhaps that is where the saying, “Be careful what you ask for,” originates. The Holy Spirit doesn’t pull any punches, He imparts only truth and sometimes truth is difficult to hear.

Because we are Christians, we can get a glimpse of what God has in store for us. I know for me, reading the Bible regularly gives me an opportunity to sense God’s presence, to feel the Holy Spirit around me. My journals tell the story of my walk with Jesus and as I read from past years entries I can see how the Spirit has been at work. It becomes obvious as I look back just how involved He has been in my life.

That fact encourages me to continue my walk each day. I might become momentarily paralyzed by the hideous reality of this world, but by keeping eyes on Jesus and walking in His light the Holy Spirit will take over and fill my heart with hope every day.

"The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:14,16)

It is the Holy Spirit and His involvement in Paul's life that allowed him to say, "But we have the mind of Christ."

Keep it Simple - 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5

I have been to a few seminars where a gifted motivational speaker addressed the audience with flair and eloquence. I went home from these events feeling like I could lick the world. I was not only motivated but encouraged by what I heard and felt I just might be able to change myself and my circumstances. I experienced a ‘confidence’ high and was certain life was going to be exciting and I was going to become rich and famous.

Unfortunately this was a momentary inspiration. The lofty goals set forth by the professional speaker soon faded from memory and I found myself right back where I was and wondering why I could barely remember the speech that was going to change my life forever. This is exactly what Paul was working to avoid. He was an intelligent and studied man and could have wowed the crowds with his knowledge but he chose instead to keep it simple.

"And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power." (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)

Paul believed the message of the cross was a simple message and he shared his story of salvation in a humble and unassuming manner. He shared his story with the crowds and simply stated the facts. Paul took no credit for his redemption but gave all the glory to God and pointed to Jesus as Savior. We too, can keep it simple when trying to tell others about Jesus. Telling our own story and showing our vulnerability is powerful testimony.

I still enjoy hearing a good message and I love the feeling I get when someone's talk resonates with my heart, but I know it is still the simple message of the Gospel that will change my life for eternity.

1 Corinthians 1:1-17

What causes an argument, a fight, a disagreement? I am giving this some thought today as I reflect on my life, specifically my past life. Before I invited Jesus into my life I was not a very nice person. I did not relish confrontation, but if I thought my belligerence might keep you at a distance, I was all for it. Thankfully, through a series of events, God changed my heart.

"I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought." (1 Corinthians 1:10)

Often, churches are a breeding ground for discontent and disruption. Why is that? Satan is prowling the earth like a lion looking for prey. Churches are filled with people, people are sinners, and the evil one wants to halt our effectiveness in the world. When we argue, gossip, chinwag and chatter, we are destroying unity, undermining the work of the church in the world.

There is a note in my Bible in the margin next to verse 10 which reads: Never have your own agenda. Isn't that was this is all about? Disharmony in the church is the result when we are not united, but are pursuing our own agendas. I will be keeping this in mind this year, I pray God gives me and you the grace and wisdom to recognize when we might be seeking our own agenda and not His.

Luke 13: 6-9 A Year Of Fruit

Parables are so cool! I believe Jesus uses them to relate to us through our every day lives, and encourage us to think. He appeals to us through symbolism and lessons that encourage us to apply biblical stories to our life situations. A wise elderly man once told me and my husband something I have never forgotten. Sam slowly and thoughtfully stated as he gazed up into the bright, blue, summer sky, "You know what's wrong with the world these days? No one just sits and takes time to think."

This parable in Luke tells of a vinyard owner who had a fig tree planted, but after three years it still was not bearing fruit. The man told the vinyard caretaker he wanted the tree uprooted because he had been coming to look for fruit for so long and there was none. The caretaker appealed to the owner to give the tree more time. He said, "Leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down."

How does this apply to us and others in your lives? Are we the tree, the fertilizer, the vineyard owner, the caretaker? What does God want us to be? Do we have what it takes to be the caretaker of the vineyard, or should we be seeking a caretaker, fertilizer, sun and rain? Was the caretaker doing his job? Perhaps we just need a little more time to fertilize another to bring him into good standing with our Eternal Vineyard Owner. What will it take to be a strong, fruit producing tree in the new year? Sure does promote thought doesn't it? Thank you Sam.

Lamentations 3: 22-24

Lamentations is not a book I am familiar with, so I began where my mother always said I should...at the beginning. Wow! It made me think of the United States and how it was once an endearing place in the eyes of other countries. Little by little our honor, and integrity is diminishing and we are becoming despised and attacked by others. Lamentations 1:1 reads: How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was the greatest among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave."

The book continues on this same theme one verse after another. I could feel my heart identify with our present situation, as well as the future of our children and our children's children. It was difficult not to take every word personally and on a national scale, feeling a sense of devistation and hopelessness. Then, as He always does, God began molding my heart like clay. As I neared the passage for today, the tone began to change... Amen! "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

Amidst the hate, destruction, immorality, and violence of this world, our God remains faithful when we look to Him. "I say to myself, the Lord is my portion: therefore I will wait for Him."

Ecclesiastes 3:11 God's Timing Is Perfect

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end."

As I get older my thinking changes. I find myself more frequently pondering my future with the Lord, and as I believe many do, questioning once again my worthiness. Have I truly done what the Lord wanted me to do with my life. Did I use my gifts appropriately? Do I truly deserve a place at his side? This world and satan play games with our minds and often cause us to question and doubt.

The truth is this: as stated is Ecclesiastes, "....they cannot fathom what God has done....." I believe this is the bottom line. It is not humanly possible for us to understand what God's promises truly entail. What our eternal world will be like is only a fantasy in our minds. Minds that are far to small and inexperienced to comprehend the depth and breath of His unfailing love for us.

These eternal plans so often spoken of in the bible, are difficult for our minds to wrap around, and virtually impossible to truly grasp. Only time will tell,..... not in our time though, in God's time. If we trust in God with our lives and hearts, his good and masterful timing will take care of the rest. As the theme of the movie "The Polar Express" clearly communicates, Believe........................

Forgetting the Past

"Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14)

When Jesus gets a hold of our heart we are filled with wonder and a sense of awe. I know that once I started to walk with Him I felt different. When I would revert to old behavior I was quickly struck with a feeling of regret. I would fear I was falling back into my previous lifestyle. This verse is a reminder to me I need to forget what is behind and move forward.

Life is a race, a race with time, a race to obtain all Christ wants for us. We never arrive; we are always striving, plowing on through life, forgetting yesterday and creating a bright new today. Yesterday's verse promised us a "hope and a future", today's reading assures us the past is the past.

New Years' Day is nearing; a day specifically designated as a time for new beginnings. We resolve to change, to improve, and to be all that we can. Let's approach New Year's Day from a Christians viewpoint. Let us examine our lives, decide where we want to change and ask God to help. Let's press on toward the goal together. It is good to know that we do not need to wait for January 1st to make this life change. We should come before the throne of God daily and make a new commitment.

Dear Jesus, thank you that we can come to you daily, hourly and seek your forgiveness. Thank you for always being near enough to talk to and cry out to. Help us to press on continually. Amen.

Hope for a Future - Jeremiah 29:11

The verse for today is a favorite of many. It is a verses that gives such peace to those struggling with life and battling the daily skirmishes tossed our way. I love to read the two following verses as well, for they have added meaning to my life.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

This was the first Christmas since my husband's death, the first Christmas celebrating with him, and while it could have been very sad, it surprisingly was not. At church service this morning we sang many Christmas hymns, then there was a short message where the pastor asked for people to share their testimony of Christ working in their life this past year, things they were thankful to Jesus for. There were a number of beautiful, if sad testimonies shared. I felt prompted to say something, but it wasn't my home church so I didn't feel right.

What I would have said was that I was so thankful to God for sending His Son Jesus, Jesus, who provided salvation for us by giving up His life. This year as I celebrate without my husband at my side, the one who loved everything about Christmas, I was not struck by the loneliness but by the awesome God we serve. I was imagining Dave having the ultimate Christmas party, almost like a behind the scenes party, where he was at Jesus' side, worshiping and praising to the highest extent. This verse, Jeremiah 29:11 came to mind in the midst of these thoughts.

The hope of the future in this world is bright because of Jesus and the hope of a future in the next world is more than I can take in.

Luke 2:1-20 The Birth of Jesus

I am so very humbled to have the honor of writing of the birth of our Lord. The last two Sunday’s readings have recorded angels saying to both Mary and Joseph that they should not be afraid. This time an angel appeared to the shepherds in their fields keeping watch over their flocks, and the glory of the Lord shown around them. They were terrified, but the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger.”

These shepherds were in awe. Scripture says that suddenly a company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests.” Your bible may use different words but the message remains. Glory to God, and peace to his people.

The nativity scene is so amazing. It grabs at your heart, and if you allow it, will take you back to a time of simplicity and reverence. Over and over scripture reminds us not to be afraid. God wants peace for his people, and what a way to make that clear…with a baby. There is nothing more pleasant and peaceful than a cozy, contented, sleeping baby.

This Christmas, I challenge you to seek the peace that God is offering us all. Look at the words contained within the scripture and visualize the great event. Put yourself there, right there beside the manger, or if you are more comfortable, tucked behind the robe of one of the wise men. Just go there and experience one of the most glorious days ever. Merry Christmas, and may the peace that Christ intended for you live in your heart.

Deuteronomy 18:18; Matthew 21:11

"I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him." (Deuteronomy 18:18)

God promises us so much, and we can count on every word. His promise to send the ultimate prophet was fulfilled in Jesus. Take note of the last sentence above, "He will tell them everything I command him." Jesus was referred to by His disciples as TEACHER, and rightfully so. As new Christians or followers of Christ for many years, there is always much to learn.

God sent Jesus to teach us the way; the way to eternal life, the way to happiness, peace, hope and joy. We are reminded of this every year during the Christmas season. It seems even the grumpiest of us will grin a little, the saddest among us will sense a bit of happiness and the lost will get a glimmer of hope by hearing the greatest story ever told.

Just watch a child on Christmas morning, first as they open gifts and later in the day as they act out their role in a Christmas pageant or sing in the kids choir. They are learning from the baby Jesus. Perhaps this is another reason Jesus said, "you must become like little children..." Christmas truly is for kids, and the kid in all of us.

Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23

Do you sometimes feel alone? Are the holidays difficult for you? We all have those days or even seasons when we feel alone, abandoned. Take a look at how both of the scripture verses for today tell us God is with us. Both verses predict or announce the arrival of Immanuel which means God with us.

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14)

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). (Matthew 1:23)

God sent His son so we would not feel alone, so we would know we are not alone. This first Christmas without my husband isn't near as difficult as I thought it would be. Why? Because I am not alone. I am spending part of the holiday season with family in Ohio and part with family in Wisconsin, and all of the holiday season with Jesus. It is so important we stay close, to family and to God. How do we do this?

We stay close to family by spending time with them, talking and sharing meals and family fun. We stay close to Jesus by talking to Him, sharing our hearts and having fun with Him. I manage to stay close to God by reading His Word, journaling my thoughts and spending time in His presence. How do you stay close to God during the busy holidays?

It is so good to know that Jesus is with us...Immanuel.

Matthew 1: 18-25

"The Birth of Jesus Christ." Last Sunday we talked about Mary and how she must have felt before, and after she was given the gift of Jesus. What about Joseph? He was really thrown for a loop too. A virgin birth? When that was revealed to Joseph, one can only imagine his thoughts and inner feelings about the whole thing.

That must have been quite a dream Joseph had. He too was told, "Do not be afraid." How could he argue with a voice from the heavens speaking the same words that Mary heard? Bringing the exact same message of hope for the world. Joseph and Mary both must have been thinking, "Why me? I am not worthy of this great honor, it cannot be true."

It was an honor beyond all others, yet a trial like no other. Some account is made of the time Mary spent with her son Jesus, but little to nothing is written about Jesus and Joseph sharing father/son time. It makes me wonder why. God chose Joseph for good reason to be his son's earthly father. When I think of the character of Joseph, a skilled, hard working man, it reminds me of my grandfather. The creations that emerged from his workshop were beautiful, yet he was a very quiet, gentle, and modest man. He did what he believed the Lord intended him to do, in a deliberate and focused manner. Never did I hear a cross word leave his lips. He had a strong, silent presence that required no explanation. This is the same type of man I picture Joseph being. He likely guided Jesus as a child and young boy in the same way a shepherd tended to his flock. Ever watchful, yet gentle when they stray. Though we do not have details of Jesus and Joseph's relationship, I believe we can be confident that God placed his son within the care of one of the most genuine men of all time. Because of the blind faith of Joseph and Mary so many years ago,the words of Joseph's dream are true today, "....and they will call him Immanuel" which means "God with us."

David considered it an honor and privilege that God allowed him to hear a conversation with His Son. "The LORD says to my lord:“Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

The Psalms are packed full of wisdom. The message they delivered, the comfort they have provided countless millions over the ages is a testimony to the power of God's Word for us. As we prepare our hearts and our homes for the celebration of Christmas we are reminded of the Greatest Story ever told. Jesus entered this world to provide for our salvation and our future. God is telling His son, Jesus, that He will be seated at His right hand, propping up His feet; His enemies as the footstool.

Those words conjure up quite a visual for me. There are times when I need to see that I will some day be victorious over all the pain that assails me in this life. There are those days when I need to know that my adversaries will not prevail, but that I too, will be seated in the presence of God and His Son.

Life is difficult; we struggle, learn and grow through those difficulties.
Life is challenging; we press on through the challenges emerging triumphant if not scarred a bit.
Life is short; we embrace every moment and savor the lessons learned and proudly wear our scars as a badge of honor.

"Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord." (Luke 2:11)

Jeremiah 31:15;Matthew 2:16

I can't even begin to imagine the horror parents of the little boys, back in the time of Jesus' birth, must have experienced. It is hurtful just to read the account, much less experience it. We love our children so much that just the thought they might be hurt is unthinkable.

The verse for today tells of such a time and such a heartache. The king felt threatened by the birth of a baby. Can you image being afraid of an infant? He was afraid because he believed the scriptures which foretold of a child who would be come king. This is so confusing because if he believed that much why did he not believe it all?

Verse 15 is troublesome and painful to read, but read on... The rest of the story has a happy ending. Jesus is coming and coming soon. For Believers, the rest of this story has a happy ending as well.

Jeremiah 31:15-17Again, God's Message:

"Listen to this! Laments coming out of Ramah,
wild and bitter weeping.
It's Rachel weeping for her children,
Rachel refusing all solace.
Her children are gone,
gone—long gone into exile."
But God says, "Stop your incessant weeping,
hold back your tears.
Collect wages from your grief work." God's Decree.
"They'll be coming back home!
There's hope for your children." God's Decree.

Psalm 72:10; Matthew 2:1,11

When my first grandchild was born, many wanted to come and visit, to hold him and coo over the long awaited precious bundle. They wanted to bring gifts and bless the family with love. Just think, if this is how we feel when someone close to us has a child, how much greater would it have been for those who knew that The King of Salvation was born.

At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him. (Luke 2:13-14)

Even without the benefit of email, Facebook or Twitter, word spread quickly and to distant lands as well. Jesus' birth was proclaimed by an Angel. Shepherds, witnessing the angel, went to Bethlehem to see what was going on. They when they left they spread the word too. Perhaps these lowly shepherds can be considered among the first evangelism team.

While it is never easy, Christmas must be one of the easier times of year to tell the Good News. People, whether Believers or not, acknowledge Christmas as a special time. Many people will attend church on this holiday when they might not any other day. What an opportunity to show off the new baby; to tell everyone His name and to share just a little bit of family history.

"They entered the house and saw the child in the arms of Mary, his mother. Overcome, they kneeled and worshiped him. Then they opened their luggage and presented gifts: gold, frankincense, myrrh." (Matthew 2:11 MSG)

Bethlehem Ephrathah

I heard of Bethlehem Ephrathah before, but never questioned what it was; I merely skipped over the Ephrathah part. Being the inquisitive sort that I am (NOT), I checked into this and discovered there are two cities named Bethlehem in Israel. One can be found to the north near Nazareth and one to the south near Jerusalem, where our Savior was born.

There is much Biblical history associated with Bethlehem Ephrathah, as it is the place where Rachel died, the story of Ruth took place, and David was born and anointed king by Samuel. It was because of Jesus' ancestry to King David that Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem when He was born. It is this ancestry we have been studying all week, as we witness the Old Testament meeting the New Testament.

It is interesting to note too that Bethlehem means 'house of bread,' fitting name for the Bread of Life to call His birthplace. I find so much of the scriptures surrounding and foreshadowing the fulfillment of God’s word, hail from humble beginnings. Bethlehem is a small town; Mary and Joseph are unassuming people from modest families.

From humble beginnings a Savior was born. From less than noteworthy parents, a King was brought into this world. God's plan was never to dazzle us with pageantry or royal robes or ambitious warriors. God's plan was to wow us with "a gentle whisper." (1 Kings 19:12)

Jeremiah 23:5; Luke 3:23,31

Isn't it curious to see words we use to commonly have deeper meaning and actually have origin in Scripture? I can remember my grandfather calling my brother a little sprout when teasing him. I never gave it much thought at the time, until the commercial for the Jolly Green Giant were popular. The giant had a son called Sprout. That made sense and it was a fun play on words.

A few days ago we talked about family trees, searching for members of our family line and discovering things about our ancestors we did not know before. Jesus comes from David's family tree or the root of Jesse. David is known as a man after God's own heart.

The Scripture for today refers to Jesus as a righteous Branch and my commentary defines Branch in this instance as a luxuriant sprout. Luxuriant means lush, fertile, flourishing. The Jeremiah text is heralding a rich shoot, branching out on God's family tree. Over and over again the Old Testament foretold of Jesus' coming. Don't you love it when the Old Testament meets the New Testament? All the references to trees, family trees, branches, vines, tree of life, (we could go on), come to fruition with Jesus' birth.

The days are coming,” declares the LORD,

“when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch,

a King who will reign wisely

and do what is just and right in the land.

Isaiah 1:11; Luke 3:23,32

How do we worship God? What is the proper way to approach worship; does someone who has been a Christian for years worship differently than a new believer? Does it matter? During Isaiah's time, before Jesus came to earth, true worship involved sacrifice. God called Isaiah to tell the people to change their ways. One of the changes they needed to make was their worship practices and their devotion.

This holds true for us today as well. Isaiah wrestled with the peoples' attitudes and priorities. He was charged with leading the people to know God and obey God. The Scripture today is:

The multitude of your sacrifices— what are they to me?” says the LORD.

“I have more than enough of burnt offerings,

of rams and the fat of fattened animals;

I have no pleasure

in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.

God wants our love and our worship, not messy animal sacrifice. In Isaiah's day animal blood sacrifice was the accepted and expected vehicle to worship. Because Jesus became the blood sacrifice, we can approach worship with just ourselves. We come before the throne offering ourselves by submitting and surrendering our will. We can lift up our hands and Praise our God in a worshipful pose.

Luke 1: 26-38 The First Christmas Mother

"The Birth of Jesus Foretold" is the name of this section in my bible. Chills surged throughout my body as I read again, of this incredible moment in Mary's life when Angel Gabriel was sent to Nazareth with the most important message of all time! "Do not be afraid. Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High......." Can you imagine?!

As a mother, I have been on my knees many times thanking God for the undeserved blessings of my children. Words cannot express the incredible gift that dwells within that tiny being when born, or the deep, deep love that walks down the aisle with them, arm in arm on their wedding day. It is an intense love that only a mother can know. Thank you once again my God, for giving me the opportunity to serve you through motherhood. I am honored.

We experience joy, strife, happiness, uncertainty, great excitement and even greater pain when raising children. The intensity of those emotions while being a mother to the Son of God must have been overwhelming to say the least. I can see Mary overflowing with pride when Jesus healed, fed the masses, and gently carried out the Lord's plan to save the world. I can only imagine the anguish and total misery her heart ached with, as he carried that cross. Even when we know that in the long run things will be better because of an experience our children have, it still hurts us incredibly to see them suffer. Praise God for the gift of our sons and Daughters, and for the best Christmas present of all, Jesus, the son of Mary.
Jesus the Son of God!

Genesis 49:10; Luke 3:23,33

I found myself whining again as I was writing in my journal this morning. Yesterday my new garage door opener decided not to work properly. It would get to within 3 feet of closing and pop open. There was nothing there to impede its operation, it just would not close. I don't like it when things don't work like they are suppose to. I get an unsettled feeling, anxiety if you will, over something so small.

Right on the heels of this, my devotion time today found me in 2 Kings 6:16-17. This is the story of an enemy of Israel who tried to capture Elisha by sending an army, a strong force of chariots and horses to surround the city Elisha where was staying. Elisha's servant discovered their presence in the morning and ran to his master in a panic. What was Elisha's response? "Don't be afraid."

How many times do we hear Jesus saying this very thing to us? Don't be afraid is a command, not a comforting pat on the back. Why then do I jump into fear the moment things don't go my way? Do I not trust, do I want things the way I want them and that is that? I am sensing God is telling me more. He is using simple things like broken garage door openers to remind me I am not in charge here.

Jesus is coming, Royal Authority is on the way and things as mundane as garage door openers are under His control, not mine. My everyday life is His to control. "I serve at the pleasure of the King."

Son of Isaac and Jacob

Have you ever tried to assemble your family tree? It is quite a project, and one that takes time and patience and maybe even a strong stomach. When we dig into our history and discover the folks who we will claim as our ancestors we might be shocked. There is a saying, "It takes all kinds to make up this world," could be a line you declare too.

While working on my family tree I discovered descendants with history of heart ailments, amazing military records and some startling truths as to the integrity of a great-grandfather. I learned that while I was born and raised in Wisconsin then moved to Ohio, our family roots began in Ohio. Providence?

The Scriptures we are directed to today tell of the lineage of Jesus; they point out the ancestral characters in our Savior's line. Family history was important then and still is today. Jesus' family tree is traced back to David (see Isaiah 11) and then to God. It feels good to know that I am Jesus' kinfolk, and can claim him in my tree.

Promises - Genesis 22:18; Galatians 3:16

The verses we have to read this week are preparing us for things to come, good things. The stories in Genesis and in Hebrews herald the coming of a King, a redeemer and they are filled with promises of a wonderful life when lived in harmony with God's Word.

"and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” (Genesis 22:18)

I have to admit that my life, even when I wasn't living in harmony with God's Word, felt pretty good at the time. When I read these words I can't quite relate, as I was not always a faithful follower, but I didn't go around with tears in my eyes and an ache in my heart, like I do some days now. Do these words shock?

Let me put it another way. Abraham and Sarah were happy before Isaac came along. They loved one another and must have had good times together. Then when God's promise was fulfilled and Sarah gave birth they were happier than before, they felt like they were closer to each other and to God.

"The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed." (Galatians 3:16)

I was happy, then I began a personal relationship with Jesus and I became happier than I had been before. There was a missing piece in place. God's promise of peace and hope filled my life. The fulfillment of God's promise makes all the difference in our lives. For me, that is why Christmas is so special, why I cling to His promises every day and why you should to.

Psalm 2:7; Matthew 3:17

Many children long for affirmation from their father that they are special, one-of-a-kind. Some will act out in an attempt to get the much sought after attention. A father can make or break the spirit of their child by a look or a word.

My brother would do almost anything to gain the attention and approval of his father. He would get himself into such trouble because of this. As children, we need sanction from our parents; we need to feel special in their eyes and we long for their unconditional love.

Need proof, just watch from the sidelines as children play in their favorite sports competition. How many times do you see a player gazing over the stands in search of that special person who they are trying to impress? When the eyes meet, the young athlete seems to relax and get his or her head into the game. Dad is there, Dad is watching, Dad can see me when I make a big play.

And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)

Jesus was human and when He heard these words His heart must have swelled with love for His Heavenly Father. He was sent to earth to do His Father's bidding. His Father was watching and His Father acknowledged to the world that He was pleased. God does the same for us when we serve at His pleasure. You can be sure God is in the stands watching us as we make the 'big plays' in life. He is our biggest fan.

Dreams Come True - Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18, 24-25

What sort of dreams do you have? It is said that everyone dreams but not everyone remembers them. I know I seldom recall dreaming and if I know I had a dream, I rarely have any recollection of the content. But once in a while I do, and those instances the vision will stay with me for a number of days before they fade.

There are rare occasions when a dream troubles me or when I give them more than a passing thought. But there are also times when I wonder if God is guiding me during my sleep time. If I fall asleep praying, I often wake up with the last thought on my mind. I feel like I have been given a solution to the prayer I placed before God. Imagine then, Joseph's dreams which included messages from angels.

"When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife." (Matthew 1:24)

Joseph likely was worried about Mary, and what he should do about their betrothal. I don't doubt he loved her, and as a prayerful man he would pray about it. Joseph was familiar with scripture and had probably read from the Book of Isaiah. "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14)

Joseph willingly followed God's direction, his obedience was swift; he simply did what God wanted him to do.

God's heart aches - Genesis 3:15; Galatians 4:4

This verse finds God speaking to the serpent. It is noteworthy to recognize that God did not offer Adam and Eve a second chance, but it would seem they did not ask for one; they were not repentant. Do you find that as amazing and I? When I first read that I had to read it again and then research it some. Adam and Eve did realize they were naked, but they were not sorry for their actions which lead to their new emotions of shame.

“And I will put enmity

between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and hers;

he will crush your head,

and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15 MSG)

It never occurred to me to question what would have happened had the couple asked for forgiveness. When we think about it, how much time do we waste, how many relationships do we allow to be destroyed by our pride? The simple gesture of humility, acknowledging wrong doing and asking for pardon could change everything.

The saying, "Life is too short," is often voiced because of lost time or missed opportunity. It is crucial that we take a lesson from Adam and Eve, admit our faults and our sins and repent. Because we have God's Word to read and study and learn from, we know the end of the story so we have all the more reason to turn to God this day and every day.

Phillipians 2:1-11 (Reaching Out By Looking Out)

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only at your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus."

The Christmas season is upon us, and with that comes many opportunities to reach out. Drop a few coins or dollars into the red kettle, or wrap up a shoe box for those who will be spending their Christmas in the shelter. These are all noble gestures indeed, as God does call us to give to the needy numerous times in the bible. I believe this passage though, speaks of our every day lives. It reaches out to us, and reminds us of God's message to reach out to others during the holidays, and also the other eleven months of the year. Not just with canned goods and trinkets, but with our hearts.

This whole concept reminds me of going on a diet. Years back when my weight was far beyond what was comfortable, I went on diet after diet. Nothing worked long term, it was temporary success at best. Then I attended a Weight Watchers meeting. There I had my belief confirmed, they said, "Diets don't work." I said "AMEN to that! They taught us about lifestyle changes and constant awareness of our eating habits and overall behaviors. It's about changing your thinking and adjusting your actions based on an established program. It's about long term contentment. It's about a promise that if you follow the plan, life will not be easy, but it will be better....and in the end, you win big time! Maintaining a daily diet of humility and obedience, hmmmm, I guess that's what they mean by WWJD.

2 Corinthians 3:7-18

At first read through, these words are confusing at best. But when I listen to the reading, close my eyes and hear the words, they begin to sink in to my heart. What I am hearing is that the covenant God made with Moses and the 10 Commandments issued on the tablets of stone were very good. The old covenant was necessary at the time, for the people to have faith and order. The 10 Commandments provided the people with guidelines and rules so they could recognize the difference between good and bad behavior.

Now, we have a new covenant in Jesus. He is the promise of God for salvation; our hope and grace; a covenant which remains forever. This covenant is one of freedom for all who believe.

"Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold." (2 Corinthians 3:12)

What does that boldness look like? At times it looks like one friend sharing the Good News with another; at other times it is acknowledging the gift of forgiveness and embracing grace and peace. I can boldly claim my salvation and I can also rest in the assurance that those I love who have already been called home, I will see one day. For good things that happen to me, I boldly declare, "God is so good, all the time."

"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Luke 9:37-43

But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. (Luke 9:42-43)

Have you ever been amazed at the greatness of God? If you are anything like me you do a lot of looking back at your life, and then see how God has been working during some difficult days. I smile knowing our God is an amazing God. I write in a journal regularly and that tool gives me opportunity to experience this any time I choose to take a look at an entry from a year ago or five years ago. It is very eye-opening.

Those times I struggled most, God was there. When I felt alone, God was there, loving and forgiving me. Some days he used other people to minister to me, sometimes music made a dark day light. Mostly His Word is speaking, guiding and comforting. I begin each morning in my journal with "now I am seeking your Word for me today."

Each day when I do this and read the scripture in the devotional I use, God speaks. Our amazing God will do this for you to. You can read the same verses I read and hear a totally different message. Amazing, simply amazing!

And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. (Luke 9:43)

A Mountain-top Experience - Luke 9:28-36

The word transfiguration refers to a marked change in form or appearance; a metamorphosis; a change that glorifies or exalts. It must have been some mountain top experience for Jesus' inner circle of men. While reading this section of scripture captures the imagination and provides a visual of brilliance and stunning beauty, I can't help but wonder what Peter, James and John were really thinking.

Peter doesn't want to forget the moment, he is ready to build three shelters so Jesus, Moses and Elijah and stick around for a while. Perhaps Peter is starting to understand all Jesus has been saying to them. Just maybe this was truly a light-bulb moment and he knows Jesus will soon be gone, so he is prepared to do what it takes to keep him around longer.

"While he was babbling on like this, a light-radiant cloud enveloped them. As they found themselves buried in the cloud, they became deeply aware of God. Then there was a voice out of the cloud: "This is my Son, the Chosen! Listen to him."

When the sound of the voice died away, they saw Jesus there alone. They were speechless. And they continued speechless, said not one thing to anyone during those days of what they had seen." (Luke 9:34-36)

This story brings to mind so many different lessons, but they all point to Jesus. Jesus will change our lives. Jesus will transform our hearts. Jesus will fill us with such light and joy and hope that we will want to pitch a tent on a mountain top just to stay close to Him.

Luke 7:36-50

There are times in our lives when we ache to hear the words, "I forgive you." We are capable of hurting someone deeply, especially someone we care about. Remorse is usually great, but pride puts up a wall which hinders us from asking forgiveness. Living in the land of, "I wish I hadn't said that," or, "If only I had done things differently," is a tough place to reside. Regrets and if only's make for uneasy living.

Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

When Jesus said these words to the woman who crashed the dinner party, she must have felt a tremendous burden lifted off her heart. She recognized Jesus as one who cared deeply and as one she needed to approach. Her eyes were opening and she saw her sinful life for what it was and took action. Jesus, the light, caused her to see clearly.

When we go through life with blinders on we do not see the real world. These lessons this week remind me I need to see the world as it is, I need to rely on the one who can change my eye-sight. God's plan for you and for me is already in front of us. We only need eyes to see it and hearts to embrace it and we too will find peace.

Matthew 6:19-24

^{“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!}

Yesterday we talked about seeing others the way God would have us see them. Today the topic is still our eyes, and we take it a bit further. We are actually talking about "spiritual vision," seeing the world as God would have us see it. The words healthy and unhealthy implies generous and stingy.

A generous eye focuses on God and how we might serve His people. A person with healthy eyes is one who sees his brother in trouble and lends a hand. He is one who recognizes where he might be used and steps boldly into that arena.

A stingy eye is focused on the world, material possessions and status. A person with unhealthy eyes views the world through darkness. She cannot see clearly nor does she want to, her needs come first.

About 10 years ago I had laser surgery which enabled me to see without the use of glasses or contacts. I was opened up to a brand new world, as I had been wearing glasses for 40 years. About the same time I was introduced to the concept of pursuing a personal relationship with Jesus. My vision got even clearer following that change in my life. It is so much easier to go through life with good eye-sight; healthy/generous eyes make all the difference in attitude.

We are called to undivided loyalty to God; we are to be Salt and Light in a dark world.

1 Samuel 16:1-13

“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

I wonder how many fewer divorces there would be in the world if humans were able to see people as God sees them. Did you ever give thought to this? When I look at someone and truly see them, flaws and all, would it change my choices, my life? The saying, "You can't judge a book by it's cover," comes to mind.

When Samuel looked at Eliab, David's older brother, Samuel saw a good-looking, strong and vital young man. We don't know what exactly God saw, but God had someone else in mind. After reviewing Jesse's sons and finding none of them acceptable to the plan God had, "He asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” (1 Samuel 16:11)

How can we hope to see others as God sees them? It would require being very close to God, learning His heart so we can discern His will for us. We will never be able to perfect this, but, we can save ourselves a lot of pain and hardship by praying about everything we do, every decision we make. "Pray continually." (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

John 21:15-19

Peter denied Jesus, just as we often do.
Jesus forgave Peter, just as He does for us.
How fortunate to have a loving and forgiving God. If we did not, we would be doomed!

Some of the things we humans do, one would think might amaze God. How can he not think, "Wow, she's doing that again?" or "How many times does he have to engage in that and then beg for forgiveness before he learns?" Seven times seventy times I guess, and that's the good news for us!

As we stumble through this world aren't there times you feel like things couldn't be better, and you are able to follow God's commandments with ease, and then bam, you're off the wagon again! I guess He knew it would be like that, so He afforded us the grace of forgiveness. Have you ever been frightened though, that your sin might be too big for God to forgive? I have, and that's a scary place to be. At the beginning of the book of John, our Lord is referred to as "full of grace and truth." Jesus is not like anyone else. He will not, he cannot, let you down. If you put your trust in Him, you will not be disappointed.

John 20:19-31

Has there been a point in your life when you truly felt alive? Was it just a one-time event or did it occur often? For almost 20 years I worked for the same company, I did well, but I truly disliked what I was doing. It was only a job, and once Friday arrived I would leave the workplace and barely give it another thought until Monday morning.

The last job I had was one I loved and knew God had given it to me. I felt alive, certain I was exactly where God wanted me to be. It was wonderfully motivating and fulfilling. From that point on I always pursued that feeling, not only in my work life but in life in general.

Imagine how the disciples must have felt when Jesus came back to them, taught them a bit more, preparing them for His departure. "Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20:21-22) Jesus has done the same for us. He left us His Word and when we dive into it regularly we can sense His presence, we can feel Him leading and just know when we are in His will.

Where are you today? Are you experiencing this Peace from God yet? Is it a onetime feeling for you, or do you feel it regularly? Personally speaking I know I will go after this PEACE daily.

John 20:1-10

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

I can't think of anything to be more thankful for than this. Because Jesus died for us, we will be reunited with our loved ones in the not to distant future. This is the first Thanksgiving Holiday without my husband and I am not sad because I know this to be true.

Have a blessed holiday today and know that I will be thanking God for sending His Son and I will be praising Him because He has made life worth living and dying for.

John 18:15-27

My daughter and I were talking about the day when Jesus comes back and of the time that leads up to that glorious day. We both were saying how frightening it might be to have to endure the hardships the Bible talks about, the pain of hunger or the anguish of a plague. I have always feared the possibility that I would not have courage to stand up for Jesus if physical pain threatened me or someone I love. I have always wondered if I would cave like Peter.

“You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not. (John 18:17)

The fact is there is opportunity every day to experience and proclaim Jesus as my Lord and the one I follow through thick and thin, just as there is occasion to deny that He means anything to me. When I ignore my conscience and toss my principles to the wind, I am rejecting Jesus just as Peter did. When I allow my 'wants' to overrule my needs and pursue worldly passions, I reject Jesus and His love.

On the same note, when I forgive a friend for hurting me I am acknowledging Jesus' forgive me too. When I give of myself to people who need what I have, I am showing the world that Jesus is more important.

Luke 22:24-34

"A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest." (Luke 22:24)

The Life Application Commentary says this, "The most important event in history is about to take place and the disciples are still arguing about their prestige in the kingdom!" First they are mumbling to themselves, wondering who was going to betray their Lord and in the next breath they are asking which of them was the greatest. Very human conduct, don't you think?

I can't help but wonder if all this posturing for position isn't a nervous maneuver. When I know a truth but do not want to face it, I can come up with all sorts of ideas to distract my heart from reality. Jesus has been teaching his followers about His death for some time now, preparing them for the day He would not be with them. Just maybe they are beginning to understand and are in a state of denial.

This type of behavior is often a coping mechanism, a way of carrying on in an effort to deny tomorrow its place in our life. Is there something we need to be preparing for; some event that will change our world? Perhaps we need to take a strong look at our finances and lay out a better plan, curbing our spending. There might be a relationship that needs attention and really can't wait until just the right moment to arrive.

Whatever it is, we can take comfort in the fact that Jesus is praying for us just as He prayed for his disciples, just has He prayed for Simon right before the man denied knowing His Savior.

“But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:32)

The Gate and The Shepherd - John 10:7-18

The gate to the sheep's pen was the only true access. If anyone or anything were found to be inside and they did not enter from the gate - they were predators or thieves, and had no authority to be there. The Shepherd would be expected to eliminate the intruder.

"Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep." (John 10:7)

One of my favorite pictures of Jesus is the one that depicts Him holding a lamb very close and it almost looks like Jesus is snuggling with the little creature. It is a picture of compassion, love and peace. The fact that Jesus cares enough to consider us His sheep and would go after us if we turned up missing is a beautiful picture.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (John 10:11)

Jesus knows us inside out, just as a shepherd knows his sheep. Sheep also recognize the voice of their guardian and no other voice will they respond to in the same way. As Christians, we distinguish the voice of our Shepherd when we corral ourselves in His Word, hear His voice and follow it to safety and salvation.

A shepherd will go to battle for his sheep, he will doggedly go after any that are lost or in danger. We have a Shepherd who will do the same.

Luke 9:1-6, 10-17

Trust. Have faith. Believe. Trust. Have faith. Believe. Trust. Have faith. Believe.

Sometimes I think about how we have been ripped off. It makes sense that "The Twelve" trusted, had faith, and believed.....they could see, smell, and touch Jesus. We are so far removed from that miraculous time we must search deep within ourselves and His Word to be able to comfortably settle into that type of true commitment. Seriously, He fed the multitudes, (five thousand it is written) with five loaves of bread and two fishes? Seeing that would make a believer out of nearly anyone! Not only that, there were twelve baskets of broken pieces of bread left!

Though at times we may feel more like doubting Thomas than one of the Lord's disciples because of our human nature to question, remember, it's kind of like a marriage. It's all or nothing. We can't pick out the parts of the bible that we are comfortable with, holding tightly to that which gives us promise and leave the rest. It's the whole package. Though Jesus' apostles had living proof of His love and power, they still had a very rough life and at times likely thought of heading for the hills. Our lives too can be very difficult, seemingly too much to bear at times. However if we build our lives upon that rock of faith, trust in and live out God's word, and believe he will indeed one day bring us home, we will weather the storm.

Matthew 25:31-40

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34)

How do we serve others in need? Just what does it look like to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit those in prison? The holidays are here. Thanksgiving is next Thursday and soon after we celebrate Christmas. There are always opportunities to help people who need us, but during this time of year it is even easier. Outside many grocery stores and retail shopping establishments you will see the "bell-ringers". Dropping a few coins or more, into their buckets is a good start.

Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? (Isaiah 58:7)

Driving down the road it is not unusual to spot a sign in front of a church that is asking for blankets or coats to help keep people warm in the bitter winter cold. Having Thanksgiving Dinner this year? Why not invite someone who is alone, perhaps a military wife whose husband is away serving our county. Perhaps you know of a recent widower who could use a reminder of the way a home-cooked meal tastes.

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40)

Matthew 21:28-32

Actions speak louder than words. I have heard this saying since a small child and never really gave it much thought. The words we say do have a lot of meaning, but in the end it is what we do that backs up our words. It is easy to spout lofty principles but they mean nothing if we don't practice what we preach.

The last thing anyone in this world needs is conflicting lessons. During Jesus' time the Scribes and Pharisees delivered this type of message regularly. It reminds me of another saying from childhood, “Do as I say, not as I do.”

What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

“‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

“Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

“Which of the two did what his father wanted?” (Matthew 21:28-31)

We are called to repent, to believe in Jesus; to believe Jesus. Our words matter, but our actions matter even more. Let them know we are Christian by our love. A bigger message here for me is, though my actions of the past were not admirable, there is grace and forgiveness. I can turn, change, and live like John the Baptizer preached. I can be like the son who said “no” but went anyway. He changed his mind, he repented and he obeyed.

Matthew 7:7-14

If ever there was a passage calling out my name and telling me to memorize these words, Matthew 7:7-8 are those.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

To think these are Jesus' words to us. He knew the situations we would be getting ourselves into, the heart ache we would experience, the pain that would squeeze the breath from us; so He gave us this perfect command. Ask...Seek...Knock.

Sometimes we are too proud to ask, to tired to seek, to afraid to knock. Jesus knew we would have these feelings, these seasons on our lives when almost any effort we make would be too much; would put us over the edge. But the promise that when we take Him up on His Words we will receive answers to our questions, we will find relief from the pain and the door to peace and joy will open wide, gives me strength to approach the door and gain access to Jesus.

Dealing with each day, one day at a time, I will approach that door knowing Jesus is on the other side and He is ready to take over.

Proverbs 25:1-12

Don't jump to conclusions—there may be
a perfectly good explanation for what you just saw. (Proverbs 25:8)

Have you ever jumped to conclusions? Have you ever thought you had something you witnessed, all figured out, only to find how wrong you were? Talk about embarrassing moments that humble us!

  In the heat of an argument,
   don't betray confidences;
Word is sure to get around,
   and no one will trust you. (Proverbs 25:9-10)

The lessons in this Book of Proverbs are very convicting, don't you agree? Reading the two verses above I am cringing as I recall a time when I allowed my emotions to rule my better judgment. It takes a lot of effort to find a good and faithful friend, but it only takes one stupid moment to lose that friend.

  The right word at the right time
   is like a custom-made piece of jewelry,
And a wise friend's timely reprimand
   is like a gold ring slipped on your finger. (Proverbs 25:11-12 MSG)

Proverbs is about relationships, like last week’s Scripture verses. Proverbs contains so much wisdom and it points me in the direction I need to go. I feel like God is speaking through Solomon and telling me that humility is the only way to build relationship. I am instructed not to let pride get in the way of my heart. Pride is at the root of broken friendships and humility is at the center of a lasting bond. (Sounds like a Proverb, doesn't it?)

Proverbs 15:23-33

Joy is found in giving the right answer.

And how good is a word spoken at the right time! (Proverbs 15:23)

Have you ever regretted saying something even before the words were out of your mouth? My grandfather used to tell me that was called putting your mouth in motion before your mind was is gear. I would have to admit the majority of my apologies to people were over something I said rather than something I did.

It is always fruitful for me to take a breath and compose my thoughts before responding to a difficult person. There are situations as well, that require a deep breath before speaking. If any of you reading this have recently suffered a loss or encountered a life threatening illness, you know how words meant to comfort can cut deeply.

A cheerful look brings joy to your heart.
And good news gives health to your body. (Proverbs 15:30)

There are times when words need not be spoken and it is these times when a cheerful look, or a touch on the shoulder says all that need be said. It is the compassionate gaze, the reassuring smile and the consoling hand that bring comfort.

Numbers 6:22-27

"Later, Dude," or, "Right back at you," are words we might hear when a teen or young adult bids farewell. There are many ways to say goodbye to our friends or family. When good friends or loving family members part company they might hug or share a kiss as they depart, often expressing their love for one another.

The reading today is filled with familiar words overflowing with peace and love. We hear these words said over us as we complete our worship time on Sundays. These words link us to God, and we are blessed by them.

The LORD bless you
and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you
and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)

What did you feel as you read the Scripture above? I felt warm, loved and at home. That is what God's blessing is supposed to do for us, wrap us in a blanket of security and peace; cuddling us in warmth of His wonderful name. This is a perfect way to end a time of worship together and a beautiful way to begin the week.

2 Corinthians 5:14-6:2 Reconciliation

2 Corinthhians 5:14-6:2

“All for one and one for all!” Remember the The Three Musketeers chant? That is what I thought of when I read the beginning of this daily reading. It says: “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.” I really don’t remember exactly what the Three Musketeers were up to, but I have a feeling it was not exactly what God intended. None the less, they had the right idea of sticking together for the good of the group and their cause.

Reconciliation is the theme. “And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him ho died for them and was raised again. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation: the old has gone, the new has come!”

If we are Christians, we can live out the richness of new life. Our new identity is the real and true gift of being remade through the power of Christ. We need to be strong to make our way through this world, keeping our eyes fixed on what is eternal and not of this world. Strengthen that new self through prayer, reading God’s word, and developing relationships with other Christians so that together we can be strong and stand firm against the evils of this fallen world. Amen.

Luke 15:23-32

My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’” (Luke 15:31-32)

This story of the prodigal son has been told over and over again. We have heard it explained from three separate and unique vantage points. And, depending on where we are life at the time we hear it, we will be impacted accordingly; with one having more influence over us than the other.

First we see the view point of the youngest son. He demanded his inheritance so he could go out and see the world and find himself. This man wanted more than the life he was living, he wanted adventure and freedom. He needed to be his own man.

If you are a parent, you probably feel for the father of the young man. You know what is happening in your son's head and his heart. You understand what he is doing even if you don't approve. You are smart enough to realize that children have to find their way in the world, they have to make their own mistakes for the lessons they learn to mean anything.

The oldest son feels betrayed. Perhaps he would have liked to leave as well, but felt a sense of duty to stay with his father, maybe even offering himself up as a martyr, sacrificing his happiness. Then again, perhaps he already sowed his wild oats and his father was unaware. Not everyone leaves their home to find themselves. Some of us just leave our values and morals behind and no one is the wiser.

There are numerous scenarios we can conjure up when studying this popular story. This week as been filled with stories of relationships; how they fall apart and how vital it is to repair them. Matthew 5:21-26

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ (Matthew 5:21)

Some reading the devotions this week may find they are uncomfortable; perhaps feeling a bit convicted by the Holy Spirit. Writing as one who struggled with 'touchy-feely' situations, never allowing any emotional openness to pervade my being, the text for today would have made me squirm.

Relationships can be tricky and they can be sticky as well. When we find ourselves chewing on resentment for an entire day or week - it is time to do something. If someone's words cause us to cringe or even cry - it is time to do something. When the actions of a stranger, who cut us off in traffic, spoil our day - it is time to do something.

My parents used to lecture me saying I was too sensitive, so I toughened up. For years if I shed a tear I was ridiculed and labeled a cry baby. So I toughened up; no more feelings allowed. I also did not allow myself to laugh, for that was a feeling too. How freeing it is to realize Jesus cried and He laughed. Jesus was all about relationships, and He taught that we cannot have healthy, meaningful relationships without feelings.

Sometimes feelings need to be addressed and expressed. When I have made a mistake I need to confess to the person I wronged. Scary concept? Sure, but once practiced it is freeing. When my feelings have been hurt, am I too just stuff it and carry a grudge? The simple act of letting someone know that what they said or did was hurtful, takes courage, but once again it is freeing to the soul.

The text today is not just about ending someone's life, no it is about killing someone's spirit. It is even more about how Love conquers...Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8)

Act Now - Malachi 4:1-6

I was reading a devotional this morning and was stopped by this comment about relationships. "In the intensive care waiting room the world changes." Many of you reading this can understand what it means. I know I can, but if not for the 'waiting room' experiences of almost a year ago, I probably couldn't.

"Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the LORD Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them." (Malachi 4:1)
Do we place too much value on feelings? Feelings aren't facts, as they say in 12-step recovery rooms. Our painful memories aren't accurate or at the very least no longer relevant. In the waiting rooms of life we find that grudges disappear, past hurts fade and hearts are healed. Why should it take a waiting room experience to find peace and to give love a second chance?

God is instructing us to cast aside our arrogant ways and embrace our relationships, appreciating the fact they may only be for a season. God is preparing us for eternity with Him, but we have to learn how to love each other so we can love Him.

"If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." (1 Corinthians 13:2)

Genesis 33:1-10

This story makes me smile. I hope you had a chance to read the chapters between 27 and 33 because they are filled with life and struggles. They lead up to this climactic meeting between brothers; one feeling guilty from the deception he performed years earlier, the other full of love and forgiveness. He is anxious to see his brother and get caught up.

What a party there must have been that evening. How many times in our lives do we let our pride, or fear, get in the way of doing the right thing? How many sleepless nights have we given up to tossing and turning in our guilt and shame?

"But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept." (Genesis 33:4)

If this scene were a Hollywood production, this is where the slow motion camera would zoom in on first one then the other brother as they closed in on each other. Can you see the family of Jacob watching in fear and then smiles slowing breaking across their faces? I love the visual the words in Genesis 33 provide the reader. Love in action, the love of God coming out in his servant, Esau.

Does this make you just chomp at the bit to call you brother you may be estranged from? Don't you want to knock on your sister's door and give her a big hug? Go ahead, it isn't too late. Take it from one who knows, while I was not at odds with my sisters, distance kept us from having a close and meaningful relationship. That has all changed now and I know it is part of God's big plan for us. Years ago I claimed Jeremiah 33:3 and God is working now.

Genesis 27:30-41

The story in Genesis today is a story of sibling rivalry; there are a number of them. The first was the conflict was between Cain and Able. This struggle ended in the death of Abel at the hand of his brother. Another is the dynamic saga of Joseph and the tug of war with all his brothers. The story today involves Jacob and Esau.

Do you have any experience in this area? Many brothers and sisters vie for the attention or love of a parent or a grandparent. This competition is generally unfounded and only in the mind of the child who feels less important or special than a brother or sister. As a parent I was always careful to buy things of equal value for each of my kids. I even practice this today with the grandchildren.

I wonder if God ever questions why I don't vie for His attention more. He would certainly be justified in turning away when I run to him during times of trouble. He would be justified in asking me, "What do you want this time?" as it is often the only time my eyes and heart are totally focused on his power and might.

When Jacob fooled his father into giving him the blessing that belonged to his brother, Esau, the rivalry turned into a vendetta which Esau swore to avenge and slay his brother.

"Esau seethed in anger against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him; he brooded, "The time for mourning my father's death is close. And then I'll kill my brother Jacob." (Genesis 27:41)

There is a happy ending to this story, it just takes a little time and a lot of patience from a God who is Patience and Love and Grace. Turn in Tuesday to hear the turn this story takes.

Psalms 23

Life with God...... It can't get any better than that!

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,

He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name sake.

of the shadow of death, I fear no evil,
for you are with me; your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
AMEN!
My bible states that this is the most famous Psalm it contains. As I read it, I have the vision of a kind, caring and gentle shepherd. Too many of us imagine God as demanding and powerful. Well, though he has power beyond our imagination, he posesses love and compassion we are unable to comprehend. Isn't this the God you hope to spend your eternity with?

New Jerusalem - Revelation 21:1-5

How many times in our lives have we wished for a 'do-over'? Rebellious actions or damaging words slip out and we wish for a chance to take it all back. As humans we are sinful and as Paul said, "I do what I don't want to do and I don't do what I want to do." (paraphrased by writer) The Book of Revelation is filled with promise and hope for a new day and a new life. Revelation is filled with examples of God's love and grace.

I am enthralled with the concept of God making everything new. Adam and Eve's disobedience caused our world to be filled with sin. God's son, Jesus, came to redeem Adam and Eve's behavior and thus our behavior as well. Jesus has made everything new for us. And on that great day when He returns "Every knee shall bow." What a visual those words provide to the broken and pain riddled followers of Jesus.

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

John 14:1-7

You have probably noticed the scripture lessons for this week are preparing us for the All Saint's Day Celebration this coming Sunday. For those of us reading this week who have recently lost someone we love, these selections are very pointed and poignant. Many of the titles for the daily readings touch the hearts of mourners, caressing them with hope and healing.

I recall a number of conversations my husband, Dave, and I had in preparation for his move from this world to the next. The conversations were amazing and usually happened when of the pastors were visiting and we started discussing a verse that was shared. It may have been a sad time of my life but it was also a very meaningful and dare I say wonderful time as well.

Christians can prepare one another for meeting Jesus with confidence and compassion. It is common for the question, "What will happen when I die?" to arise. We all wonder that, even though we are confident of our destination. As humans we sometimes are curious as to the details. When Dave asked me that question I thought he meant, "Will I go to Heaven," while what he really meant to ask was, "If I have a new body and a new name how will you recognize me when you get there?"

These four verses from today's reading are like music to my ears. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” (John 14:1-4)

John 10:25-30

As someone who is in charge of a project will testify, many times decisions they have made and orders given are questioned by those who have been charged with the job. Even little children challenge authority. Many years ago one of my girls was spending time with their grandmother. The child was in the car and instructed to sit down. (This was in the day before child restraint laws.) Her response was, "You're not the boss of me."

I cannot count the number of times I defied authority and lived to regret it. It takes wisdom to get to the place of recognizing, believing and ultimately obeying those who have earned and deserve our trust. Experience is generally the teacher of this lesson. The Jews in Jesus' day had experienced, but still they were stubborn, they did not believe nor trust His authority. “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep." (John 10: 25-26)

I cannot imagine the feeling of being told by Jesus, "You are not my sheep." I know there are times I too, challenge His authority by taking my life into my own hands, by ignoring the command to, "pray continually," or to turn my back on my neighbor in their time of need. It is time I open my eyes to the reality of Jesus' love as the Shepherd of my life. When He leads me from danger I willingly will put my hand in His.

Luke 23:32-43

Even death cannot separate us from the love of Christ. What an amazing statement and one I draw comfort from. This week as we prepare for the celebration of All Saint's Sunday we are drawn to the cross. If not for the cross there would be no joy in this world, no hope at the death of a loved one. It is because of the cross I was able to praise God and sing following my husband's death.

Do you have a similar experience? These are the stories we are called to share with the world. People who do not know Jesus cannot have the same peace Christians hold in their hearts. This fact does not make the life/death struggle any easier. It simply gives us a reason to move forward, because we know we will be reunited again. These are empty words to the world; meaningless noise that only fills the dead air.

Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

The words above are just what I need to hear. The words above fill my heart with hope that life has a purpose and we are all part of that purpose - that amazing plan. What will fill your heart this Sunday, as the names of the faithful are read aloud? Tears may fill the eyes, but peace will fill the hearts of the faithful followers.

Isaiah 40:1-10

How often in our lives do we look for comfort, do we seek to feel better about the world, especially our little piece of the world? Is your world falling apart today, do you feel alone or rejected? Oh, dear friend, this too is part of life, part of growing strong in faith and part of developing a personal testimony God can use.

It is good to know that God doesn't leave us alone during these seasons. When we look around us we can find people God has placed in our lives who will understand our problems. We can also gain comfort by reaching out and grabbing hold of God himself. His Word in this Isaiah text is meant to comfort us and to provide hope for tomorrow.

A voice of one calling:
“In the wilderness prepare
the way for the LORD;
make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be raised up,
every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level,
the rugged places a plain.
And the glory of the LORD will be revealed,
and all people will see it together.
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

It has been a year since my world began to fall apart, a year since life as I knew it began to change. If I did not have The Living Hope to reach out for, everything would be much different now. Because of God and the faith I have in His goodness I can claim the scripture above as mine. "Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low..."

We are all invited to draw near to God and experience His comfort.

Isaiah 35:1-10

If you need a pickup, a bright outlook for tomorrow, read the Isaiah text slated for today. It is filled with the promise of a bright future with God, overflowing with pictures of bounty and fabulous harvests. Places that were once barren, dry and desolate will become fertile and lush with colorful foliage. If I were an artist I would paint a picture and share with everyone I knew.

But, guess what? We are all artists of sorts. We have all been gifted with special skills and talents. If you gift is with a paint brush then get out your brushes and your canvas and record with color. If your area of expertise is with words, then tell the story. Share with someone what God has done for you and use this scripture as proof of the majesty yet to come. Here are just a few of the promises:

the wilderness will rejoice and blossom
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;
Strengthen the feeble hands
steady the knees that give way
Then will the eyes of the blind be opened

This week, as we approach All Saints Sunday and give ourselves a few moments to ponder those who have gone ahead of us this past year, imagine they are experiencing this splendor already. They no longer struggle with bodies that are broken. They feel no pain or heartache. They have been set free and as much as I wanted things to be different at this moment in time, I know God's plan is perfect. For now that is good enough for me.

Romans 3:21-31

We all fall short. None of us has the ability to be “good enough” to enter the kingdom of heaven based on our actions, no matter how many good deeds we partake in. It is by the Grace of God we are blessed with this privilege. The NIV Dictionary Concordance defines Grace: An underserved favor or gift; the undeserved kindness and mercy that God gives us. Following the “Roman Road” tells it all. Please come along with me on the journey of a lifetime! There are five stops.

1. Romans 3:10 There is no one righteous, not even one.
2. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
3. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.
4. Romans 5:8 God demonstrated his love for us in this; while we were still
sinners Christ died for us.
5. Romans 10:9 If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Our scripture reading for the day includes a portion of “The Roman Road.” It was first introduced to me as a way of explaining my Christian faith to those with questions. It may be the road less traveled, but I invite you to join me on the reality of this mysterious yet marvelous path to eternity, and please take the hand of anyone and everyone you can to come along. His Grace is truly enough!

Romans 3:9-20

"there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one." (Romans 3:11-12)
There have been a number of times in life when I felt like no one understood me; no one had a real feel for what I was saying or feeling. This was especially true for me as a child. But, there was someone I could always count on to listen and then to comprehend my heart, my grandpa. It was good to know I could turn to him for affirmation.

All too soon we grow up into adulthood. Who do we turn to? Who has our back? The verses in today's lesson reads, "...there is no one who seeks God." When trouble arises, when life gets heavy, when hearts are breaking, who or what do we turn to? Some turn to drugs or alcohol, others embrace material possessions to find happiness or just relief. God wants us to turn to Him, the only one who can truly heal broken bodies, broken hearts, and broken lives.

This all sounds too easy, trite even, but it is so true. Only God can make a difference in lives. During my husband's illness and subsequent death, only God could provide the comfort a grieving family needed. What is happening in your life that only God can change? Seek Him, reach out to God for help and He will change your life.

The rest of the story... - Romans 3:1-8

"So what difference does it make who's a Jew and who isn't, who has been trained in God's ways and who hasn't? As it turns out, it makes a lot of difference—but not the difference so many have assumed. First, there's the matter of being put in charge of writing down and caring for God's revelation, these Holy Scriptures." (Romans 3:1-2)

The Life Application Commentary tells us being a Jew and being circumcised did have meaning, but only as part of God's total plan. It is like the old radio program says, "But now hear is the rest of the story." The Jews were entrusted with the very words of God. What a privilege wouldn't you say? What a responsibility too, and one Paul took very seriously.

The Jewish nations were given the honor of recording God's Word, writing down for posterity and recording it truthfully and with love. The Word being all about Jesus and the salvation He would be bringing to the world. Anyone, Jew or Gentile, who rejects the Word of God doesn't change the fact that the Word of God is true. I might not believe it, but it is still true.

Romans 2:17-29

There are many sayings I remember my grandfather reciting to me. One of them was, "Do as I say, not as I do." This was usually preached to me when I questioned a command he gave. For instance he might tell me to leave his tools alone. I would challenge his order by citing he was always in the garage working on something and using those tools, so why couldn't I?

"you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?" (Romans 2:21-23)
The words from the Scripture reading today find a lesson in walking the walk and talking the talk. How many of us have felt betrayed when someone we respected and admired because of their walk with Jesus, slipped up and did the opposite of what they taught or preached?

We are all human and we are all sinners, so we must be very careful not to be a stumbling block to others in this fashion. When up against a situation where temptation rears up and attempts to coax us to act opposite our faith it is time to ask, "What would Jesus do?" Some suggest this saying is trite and over-simplified, but it works for me. I pray my walk and my talk always complement each other.

Without Excuse - Romans 1:18-32

"How can anyone take a look around at all the wonder in this world and not believe there is truly a God?" I ask this question often as I look at the scenic fall landscape. God's glory and amazing presence surrounds me every day. It surrounds you as well. What do you see when you open your eyes? What wonder and splendor is before your eyes, there, just for the taking-in?

"But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can't see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. So nobody has a good excuse." (Romans 1:19-20)

If you ever wonder at the reality of God I only need look at my journal entries and see how He has been moving, I only need look at my family and see the three beautiful grandsons who are an amazing miracle and proof of God's existence. How about you; what is in your life that would not be there were it not for God. What truth in your life points to the glory of a wonderful God?

Have I Got A Story For You! Romans 1:8-17

What’s your story? Have you ever put down in words your faith journey? Some people wouldn’t know where to start, because their story is so full of twists and turns. Others of you though, have never put your faith story into words because you don’t believe you have one. Your story would be too boring. You haven’t gone through huge struggles to have God rescue you.

To that I say praise God! We all have a story, some have more bends then others but they are all God blessed. Some of us have been rescued from a shameful life of sin and poor choices, others have always known God was there and lived their life trying to serve Him.

Our scripture passage today says, “I want to see you and share with you the same blessings that God's Spirit has given me. Then you will grow stronger in your faith. What I am saying is that we can encourage each other by the faith that is ours.”

So I’ll ask you again, what’s your story? If you haven’t thought about it before, spend some time writing it down and then share it with others because, “we can encourage each other by the faith that is ours.”

PRAY!

Pray alone with your God! Pray with a congregation of other believers! Pray with a small group! Pray with one other Christ follower! Pray with and for non-believers!......and when you have finished, Pray some more!

Once again Paul reminds us of his suffering for the Lord, and how he was in chains for proclaiming the mystery of Christ. Then he says, "Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should." He doesn't ask for prayer to be freed of those chains, but that within his bondage God's message is made clear.

Our lives on this earth are filled with great suffering and bondage as well. God was up front about this with us right from the get go. He did not promise us that following His Word would bring us a wonderful life here. He clearly offered an honest view of what it would be, using words like persecution, suffering, and pain. Though there are many happy moments in our lives, the older we become the more we realize the reality of his claim. Through our trials however, the importance of maintaining a relationship with Him becomes even greater. Prayer is key. We have been directed many times in the Bible to pray, because prayer is powerful!

God's Up to Somethin' -- Acts 11:4-18

Do you remember a VBS t-shirt imprinted, "God's up to somethin'?" I have repeated this phrase to myself many times when something in my life has taken an unexpected direction. It reminds me to keep closer to God and wait for something new to happen.

Peter knew God was up to something when he experienced a dream. The people around him, his fellow Jews, weren't open to the fact that God could change the rules, turn old things around and upside down.

Peter's reaction: "...Who was I to think that I could oppose God?" (vs. 17) He did the faithful thing by adapting and following what God's Spirit revealed. He opened to God. He trusted God. This gave him the strength and courage he needed. He led his fellow Jews into a new way of thinking. God is no longer just a God of the Jews. Now everyone is a child of God.

When God is up to something, new things can happen. We may or may not expect them. We may or may not be ready. But we know we can trust God to give us what we need to see our way through change.

What an awesome journey when we take on the courage to embrace something new God puts in our path!

Have you even been on the receiving end of a miracle? Have you ever witnessed one? Miracles are all around us, and Jesus is still in the miracle business contrary to popular opinion. The scripture lesson tells of two such happenings with the healing of a man who was bedridden for eight years and the other example is the story of bringing a disciple, Tabitha back to life.

Have you experienced some fantastic healing? Has someone you have known beaten cancer against all the odds? We all have heard stories and I imagine many could tell some. Miracles are really all around us, we only have to open our eyes, our minds and our hearts to see them. Some are subtle, nothing as obvious as coming back to life, or walking after being lame for many years.

A little over ten years ago I participated in a weekend retreat called Renewal. As our team prepared to share this gift with another group of women two of us began praying that our husbands would also want to experience what we did.

Of course we both acknowledged it would take a miracle for this to happen. Well, they both did attend this weekend event and they were on the same team and became very close friends because of this. Also, they both drew closer to Jesus and became living testimonies to God's faithfulness and answered prayer in the form of a subtle miracle.

“Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and roll up your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up. All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord." (Acts 9:33-35)

Acts 6:1-7

Life alone in the north woods of WI can be very peaceful and calming, but it can also become very lonely. I found myself wondering what I was doing there and discovered I felt like I had no purpose any longer; no real reason to get up each morning. So, I put this revelation into prayer form and entered it into my journal, seeking God's guidance and plan for me. Of course he responded quickly. "Serve," was the word I sensed.

I called my pastor and asked if there was something I could be doing at the church, a way I could serve and help. That was all it took. I know if I want to feel better about myself, to feel valued and useful, service is the answer. My attitude, outlook and heart changed almost overnight.

We can track service in Church back to the early church. Acts 6 is thought to be the story of the first church deacons. Deacons can be likened to a Care ministry in a church. The fastest way to forget your troubles and pain is to reach out to help others. Try it, you will be amazed at the blessings and the change in your heart.

"In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” (Acts 6:1-4)

Share and Share Alike Acts 4:31-37

My five-year-old was at the park the other day enjoying our unseasonably warm fall weather. He contentedly played with a few other preschoolers, who had the same idea, while I enjoyed some adult conversation with the other mothers.

We watched as our children interacted letting their imaginations go.
At one point, during their play, my son brought out his bubbles. Bubbles are always a hit as the kid’s chase the wind blown spheres through the playground hoping to pop any that dare to float within reach.

Us mothers were only partially attentive until one child reach toward the bubble container and exclaimed, “It’s my turn.” We all held our breath and readied our reaction knowing full well that Evan may not willingly relinquish his toy.

Calmly, Evan replaced the bubble wand into the container and shared with the other child. My heart melted at the site and the other mothers responded with a unison “Aww.” It felt good seeing my son willingly give up something he loved so that someone else could have fun.

Our scripture passage today shows the disciple freely giving of what they have to those in need. Our passage says, “No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.” Let’s model the example of the disciples, and preschoolers everywhere, by sharing what we have with those around us, and then sit back and listen as the angles in heaven collectively say, “Aww”.
