It is tradition in my family that my husband takes my son out for the day, while I stay home and get in the Christmas mood. This year my son is, of course, one year older and so understands a bit more about what we are doing.
He asked me why I was decorating the house. “It’s time to get ready for Jesus Birthday” I told him. “It’s almost Christmas”. He simply responded with, “Oh cool”.
Every year as we prepare for Christmas, many attitudes change into more of an “oh cool” demeanor, people become more generous, kind, and thoughtful of others. None of these things are bad. I think the constant reminder about what the season is about puts the world into perspective; my prayer is that this year that won’t rub off once the decorations are packed away.
In our scripture passage today John the Baptist is warning the Pharisees and Sadducees saying, “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” These religious leaders are coming to repent and be baptized, in order to prepare for the Messiah. John is warning them to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Let’s not find ourselves walking in their shoes. As we prepare for Christmas let’s continue being mindful until Christ returns.
