Many years ago a new form of entertainment debuted on American television called the miniseries. The first miniseries, called Roots was based on Alex Haley's work, and was a very popular storyline. The saga of a family was viewed by record numbers.
This fascinating account of a family with origins in Gambia, West Africa takes us to Colonial America. The genealogical adventure follows the historical tale of generations.
The first chapter of Matthew hi-lights a similar theme, the genealogy of Jesus. This chapter illustrates how deeply ingrained our Savior is in the history of the world. It states how Jesus' roots can be traced back to Abraham as an Israelite, and David as the Messiah.
Have you ever taken a close look at your roots, your family history? Does your ancestry matter to you? I would be excited to learn that David or Abraham was in that line-up. By the same token it might be shameful to discover someone of questionable character in that family tree.
The only thing important in this scenario is that I am a child of God, Jesus is my Savior. As long as Jesus can locate me in this heritage, I am good with that.
