Israel, My Firstborn Son - Exodus 4:18-23

Moses went to his father-in-law to ask permission to return to Egypt. Moses didn't tell the whole story. He simply told his father-in-law he wanted to go back to Egypt to visit his family. Jethro was willing to let Moses go back to Egypt. He wished him well.

Years have passed since Moses left Egypt. All of those who were in power are assumed dead and can no longer harm Moses. After receiving permission to leave, Moses loads up his family and starts for Egypt. He carries the shepherd's staff that is the staff of God. The staff reminds Him of God's presence as he journeys toward a new challenge.

God gives Moses power to perform miraculous signs before Pharaoh. However, God says that they will not convince Pharaoh to listen to Moses. God will “harden Pharaoh’s heart” against freeing Israel to worship Him.

God considers Israel as His firstborn son. When Pharoah won't let His people go, God tells Moses to let Pharaoh know He will be punished for not listening to Him. It is an intense punishment. Since Pharaoh will not free God’s firstborn son, God will kill Pharaoh’s first born son.

God makes it clear. He fulfills His promise to care for and protect His people.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus let us remember that our freedom was sent by God in His one and only Son. The Great Little One grew up to free us from our sin. Knowing that should warm our hearts…fill them, too, with peace, comfort, and joy that will last forever, not just at Christmastime.
