Just Look At That Face, 1 Samuel 16:1-7

Can I tell you something? I have a cute son. I know that all parents think their child is cute, but mine really is. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bragging as if I had anything to do with it. He is adopted so all his cuteness comes from another’s genes. I say this because there are people who will be attracted to him merely because of his looks. He has a dimple that appears on his left cheek when he smiles, that already melts hearts.

I have honestly given his appearance some thought. I have prayed over my son, when he was sleeping, that God would make his heart as attractive as his face. I love that my son is cute, but I am also concerned that he will rely on good looks and not God. Do I sound strange? Well our scripture passage today make is clear that God does not concern himself with the things people look at. “People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

We live in a world that obsesses with appearance and I don’t want my child to fall into that trap. I pray every day that he would fall in love with God and rely totally on Him. That’s something we could all focus more. Do you look at people the way most of the world does, or the way God does? It’s hard, but let’s all worry more about appearance of our heart than our face.
