Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan River. He wanted to be baptized by John. But John tried to stop Him from being baptized, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" (v14) John didn't think that baptizing Jesus would be appropriate since Jesus was without sin. John suggested it would be better for Jesus to baptize him.
Jesus answered saying, "Let it be…it is proper…to fulfill all righteousness." (v 15)
Jesus had come to do all that was God's will for Him to do. John was God's prophet, and Jesus would be obedient to God by being baptized by him.
John baptized Jesus. At the moment Jesus came out of the water, the heavens opened and the Spirit of God descended like a dove and rested on Him. A voice from the heavens said, "This is my Son whom I love; with Him I am well pleased." (v 17)
Few knew that God had come down from heaven in a little baby born in Bethlehem. He brought hope, peace, and love into the world in His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus' righteousness met God's holy, complete perfection. His baptism proclaimed Him the Righteous One.
Merry Christmas!
May you have the gift of faith,
The blessing of hope,
And the peace of His love
At Christmas and always!
