Can you afford the price? Matthew 8:1-22

I watch for sales all the time, I never want to pay more for an item than necessary.  I feel successful when I snag a good deal.  By the same token, I don’t like to skimp on quality either.  There are times it is best to pay more and have a sense of safety and wellbeing.  When seeking out bargains it is always good to count the cost.

We find two examples of the cost to follow Jesus in Matthew 8:18-22.  The first man told Jesus, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."  This man jumped right in, he allowed his emotions to give voice to his thoughts before really considering the cost.  Jesus reminded the man that following Him meant he would be roughing it.  He wouldn't be staying in the finest lodgings, but he would be sleeping on the hard ground, often without a pillow.

The second man acted in just the opposite manner; he told Jesus to wait a little bit, because he had some family business to attend to first.  He said, “Then I will follow you.”  It says in Matthew 8:21-22, "Another disciple said to him, 'Lord, first let me go and bury my father.' But Jesus told him, 'Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

Jesus is worth it all.  There is no cost too much.  To follow Him changes lives.  To follow Him is peace and joy and hope.  To follow Him is worth any cost.
