I remember when our son was a baby I started praying over him. I would pray that God would make him into a compassionate and merciful person who desires to serve others in order to spread the gospel. Almost immediately I realized that I was praying Evan would exhibit qualities that I did not see in myself. I love to spread the gospel, but I do not have a compassionate or merciful bone in my body, so I tend to repel more people than I attract.
Not too long after I started praying over my son, I was convicted by something I was studying in a Beth Moore Bible Study. She said that if there was a certain way we wanted our children to grow up serving God, the best way to see that happen was to model it for them.
Our passage today is saying the same thing. Paul is urging the church in Corinth to imitate him when serving Christ. The church was struggling with how to live and Paul was confident enough in how he was living that he simply told the church, “follow my lead.”
I have been working to be the disciple that I want my son to be. One way I have been working on it is by watching believers around me who model the characteristics I lack. I have also paid close attention to how Christ displayed compassion and mercy. He is the best example for us.
