Out Of Order, 1 Corinthians 6:1-11
“ If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? (1 Corinthians 6:1)"
“Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church?” (1 Corinthians 6:4)
Today’s passage is such a good one. It gets right to the heart of who we should be as Christians. Paul is very clear in telling us that we should not take fellow Christians to court. Let’s look at reasons why.
First, as Christians we have the Holy Spirit and the mind of Christ, we should be able to prayerfully handle disputes that come up, and not go to those who lack God’s wisdom to decide how we are to live. Non Christians will probably not care about Christian values.
Secondly, many court cases are filed out of revenge and Christians should not be motivated by revenge, but rather love. If we find ourselves wanting a brother to "get what is coming to him" where is our heart?
Third, lawsuits not only make us look bad, but they remove the focus from God, and that is never good. Our purpose as believers is to point people to God. We will have disputes because we are human but that does not justify us continuing to act human, we need to tap into the Spirit’s wisdom and seek a Godly resolution.
