Putting Others First - 1 Corinthians 8:7-13

"Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak." (1 Corinthians 8:9)

Early in my Christian walk I encountered numerous stumbling blocks. I was so new to the faith that I was easily tripped up, and Satan was eagerly waiting in the wings to do his best to keep me down. Looking back I can see just how fragile my faith was; how gullible I was to understanding truth. For me, this text is about setting a good example.

Setting a good example often means not doing something I really want to do, just because my actions may be misunderstood. It may be morally and ethically legal to act in some manner, but my behavior could cause a new believer to question.

If someone I know and care about struggles with regard to food; they work very hard to eat wisely to maintain a healthy life, it could be a stumbling block if I constantly bring gooey donuts to work and set them on the counter next to the coffee.

Love is the underlying component, the reason we act as we do. Putting God first and thinking of others needs before our own. It may be perfectly okay to do something, but it may not be beneficial.

Is it more important to exercise our freedoms or Glorify God?
