Acts 17:16-34

How often do you find the saying, "some things never change," to be true?  There are times I realize a particular scenario, be it good or bad, has happened before. For instance, the scripture today highlights the fact idols are everywhere in Athens, the community Paul now finds himself.

As much as Paul tells them God is all everyone needs, he is the true God, “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.  And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else" (Acts 17:24-25)

Idols are everywhere today as well.  I can't help but feel like the budget battles going on in Washington now involve idols.  We humans want to hold on tight to things that don't really matter while allowing the important things in life to go wanting.  " “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill." (Acts 17:29)

While we might not pray to a statue for fertility or to another shrine for wealth or health -- we have a God who is in control of everything.  We don't need to go to a mountainside to find Him; we need not travel further than the place we now stand to call upon Him.
