Luke 2: 21-38 Simeon and Anna
Simeon was featured in this scripture passage. He even got to meet the baby Jesus in person, and hold him. What an incredible gift! But who was Simeon? Not much was known of him. It seems he was another regular guy with a heart for God; a righteous man, waiting faithfully for the coming of the Messiah. Scripture says it was revealed to Simeon that he would not die before seeing the Lord’s Christ. Well, this was his big day! Simeon was led by the Spirit to the Temple. We know he was waiting for the Messiah, which meant he believed in God's Promise of redemption. He was an old man. He could have been a shopkeeper, a shepherd, or any number of things by profession -- we were never told.
Simeon prophesied what the lives of Jesus and his mother Mary would be like. He proclaimed to them that “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be spoken against… And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” A prophetess Anna, who was also very old, approached Jesus, Mary and Joseph, gave thanks to God for the child, and spoke of the redemption of Jerusalem to all who were near.
These two, Simeon and Anna, knew something that most did not. They didn't just speculate they KNEW this child was to save the world. They KNEW he would fulfill the prophecies within the bible. Without question or hesitation they praised God and proclaimed Jesus as the salvation the world had long awaited. How beautiful to be so certain, and filled with the Holy Spirit that they could be at peace going to their death KNOWING the world was then graced with the savior, the Messiah! What peace......
