I was having a discussion about fun, with a few of my friends. We were trying to describe what fun was, how the concept of just having some fun, changes as we get older and our perspective on things changes. There was a time when fun meant having a great time, partying or playing. Then we grew older and fun looked calmer, more dignified.
Some of us felt as though we were missing out on the fun things of life, but couldn't quite describe what that meant. My idea of fun matured from anticipating an adventure or a special vacation to enjoying a musical with friends or playing with my grandchildren. Fun, is all in the way we look at life.
One of my friends suggested keeping a gratitude diary to record the good things that happen daily in our lives. She said this would keep us grounded in all the good things God provides for us. Another confirmed this idea by adding she had been tracking the variety of gifts she was blessed with every day. This simple act of acknowledging the good in our lives keeps us focused on God's provision and serves as a reminder that we have our needs covered; our daily bread is spread out before us.
Psalm 92:4-5 (MSG)
"You made
me so happy, GOD. I saw your work and I shouted for joy.
How magnificent your
work, GOD! How
profound your thoughts!"
The next time you are feeling low, or wondering when you enjoy life and have a little fun, take a moment to count your blessings.
