The Buckeyes Bowl game

The Buckeyes are not playing in a bowl game this year even though they are undefeated. It just isn’t fair! They should be playing in the BCS National Championship Game on Monday, January 7, 2013 in Miami.

Nobody likes accountability. We can come up with all kinds of excuses and reasons that it just isn’t fair. Rationalizations and justifications are part in parcel with human nature. If you don’t see that in yourself then you probably don’t like accountability anymore than the Israelites.

During the time that Amos was prophesying, Israel was flourishing. The economy was going well. Many people were affluent. There was no fiscal cliff looming on the horizon. So what if there were a few little idols around the countryside. As long as the economy was good then why rock the boat.

Amos 3:2 says: "You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins."

Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof" carries on a constant conversation with God throughout the movie. At one point he asks God in mock jest why He couldn’t have chosen someone else. We might ask the same question.

But we are accountable before God. He knows all that we have done, are doing and will do. That can be scary. And yet this verse brings us hope. God has chosen us to know Him personally. We are a part of His family. He has chosen us as His sons and daughters.

Let us walk with God as His chosen people and when accountability comes into our lives, embrace it. Don’t make excuses or justifications, but embrace it and learn from it and grow from it. Grow closer to our loving Father who sent His son to take the punishment for our sins.
