Chance
By chance, when I was about 8 years
old my family took a vacation out west. And by chance, along the way we stopped
at some tourist trap store and my parents bought me a small plastic box filled
with various gemstones. They caught my fancy and because of that little plastic
box of gemstones I decided that I should go to college to become a geologist.
By chance, my high school counselor
told me that if I wanted to be a geologist the best place for me to go to
college was Michigan Tech – so I went. By chance, there was another geology
student, Ken that was a Christian. By chance, my girlfriend broke up with me
while I was at school.
Now at that time, Michigan Tech had
10 guys for every girl so if your girlfriend broke up with you it was a pretty
big deal. By chance, Ken invited me to go to church with him. Low and behold,
by chance, that church had lots of pretty girls. From these circumstances God
gave Ken the opportunity to share with me what it meant to be a Christian – by
chance.
God has been working through people’s
lives since the beginning of time. The story in Acts 10 is about how He was
working in Cornelius’ life to bring him into a personal relationship with Jesus
Christ and in Peter’s life to open his eyes to what God had in store for him.
God spoke to each of these men
independently to bring them together. When they finally met, both men had a
revelation that spoke to their hearts and changed their lives, all those around
them and the world for generations to come.
This is one of the stories of “The
Story” - God at work in our lives. He continues to be at work in your life and
in mine. He works through circumstances, through other people, through sermons,
through vacations, through movies. He works in all kinds of ways.
There is nothing that He can’t use,
even terrible things, to bring us closer to Him. We just need to be aware of
how He is working so that we can see it and know what is going on. It doesn’t
have to be a vision or an angel for God to speak to us. In fact, it can seem
like it is just by chance.
