Jesus had instructed his disciples, On one
occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father
promised, which you have heard me speak about. (Acts 1:4)
There was still much that Jesus' followers did not understand, but that would soon be cleared up. Soon they would be able to see more clearly, the plan that had been unfolding in their midst.
The feast we celebrate called Pentecost is indeed a red-letter day. Did you know this phase came from earlier times when a church festival or saint's day was called a red-letter day? The days would be written on calendars in red, signifying their import. Today in many churches we wear red on the day Pentecost is observed.
The day the Holy Spirit came to Christians in the early church was most certainly a red-letter day. It was the beginning of Christ's Church, the start of something that would infect the entire world for thousands of years.
It is a powerful experience to call upon the Holy Spirit, to pray for wisdom or guidance or hope and then to realize such peace overtake you that you know your prayers were heard. Every day we would do well to pray, "Come, Holy Spirit," for every day we need divine direction. Some days more than others.
