The verse above is one of those "thinkers" for me. I was raised in a church that believed it took good works, lots of them, to get into Heaven. Not only that, but I could never be sure of my salvation because I could never be certain I had done enough on my part to earn a place in Heaven.
Grace: (in Christian belief) the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.
Key words are free and unmerited. We sometimes use the word GRACE with such ease, but what a powerful word. To the Christian, grace can be considered our password or secret handshake. Grace is a free gift which opens wide the gates of Heaven. There are no works we could do to match the power of God's grace.
Our faith causes us to do good things, to serve others out of love and because of the love of God. Jesus' death on the cross was the ultimate "good work". If we were able to obtain salvation on our own, by our own performances, why did Christ suffer and die? Just the fact that I can know my salvation is assured, gives me peace and fills me with hope for tomorrow.
