Defining Moments

1 Peter 1:22-2:3

What is a defining moment in your life? It might be something good or something bad. It could be a relationship, an accomplishment, an event, a trip, your job - the possibilities are endless.

For me, one of my defining moments was a decision to go to E. Lansing, Michigan for the summer of 1972 to participate in a discipleship program. That decision literally changed my life.

As a result I dropped out of one college, then later enrolled in another college in something totally different. I starter my career, made friends that have lasted a lifetime, met my wife and started our family.

Peter writes about a defining moment that every believer has experienced.

"For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God."

For some, the idea of being "born again" implies that you had a previous life that was anything but Christian, and not everyone had that kind of journey. Maybe you can relate better to how the Life Application Bible puts it.

"For you have a new life. It was not passed onto you from your parents, for the life they gave you will fade away. This new one will last forever, for it comes from Christ, God’s ever-living Message to us."

No matter how you put it, for those who are believers, for those who are in Christ, for those who are followers of Christ - you are a new creation. You have experienced a defining moment that has changed you in some fundamental and basic ways.

During college, a friend of mine shared "The Four Spiritual Laws" with me one night. He left me with the booklet to think about it. When I prayed the prayer, there weren’t any trumpets or angels or choirs singing. But in that moment, a miracle happened. God came into my heart in a new and profound way and has never left.

What defining moments has God used to change and direct your life?
