Ephesians 1:15-23
My wife and I are big Michigan State University sports fans. We have bought season football tickets for the past 5 years, attended two bowl games and I avidly follow the basketball team. In fact, two years ago during March Madness the Spartans played in Columbus. Before their first game they had a reception at the hotel. As the players left for Nationwide Arena, I patted each one on the shoulder, calling him by name, and gave him a word of encouragement. I’m sure it helped them to victory.
Sports figures can become gods. Just check out the Horseshoe this fall during any Saturday home game to observe all the worshipers. What is it that we get from being close to our heroes? Is it some vicarious feeling of being a star?
Jesus is a superstar. Just listen to the words of Ephesians:
"God raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come."
Wow! It doesn’t get much bigger than that does it! What would happen if we got to know the Christ of this verse in an intimate relationship?
The Life Application Bible puts the next verse like this:
"And God has put all things under Jesus’ feet and made him the supreme Head of the Church- which is his body, filled with himself, the Author and Giver of everything everywhere."
Think about this for a few minutes. The church, which is Christ’s body, is you and me. You are Christ’s body here on earth. I am Christ’s body. And we are filled with him, the Author and Giver of life. Amazing!
Earlier in this passage, Paul prays for the Ephesians that they might know God better and know His power which "is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead". If we experienced this power and Christ’s fullness in our lives, God would not only change us, but also the world around us. It doesn’t take a superstar, just a follower of Jesus.
