Matthew 9:28-30 (NIV) "Do you believe that I am able to do
this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied. Then he touched their eyes and
said, "According to your faith will it be done to
you"; and their sight was
restored.
How do you believe in something or someone you cannot see? How do you believe when the stakes are so high, when you are at the end of your rope and you are hanging on for dear life? How do you have faith and trust in God at times like this? For that matter, how do you believe in something you cannot see even during seasons of smooth sailing?
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do
not see. (Hebrews 11:1) As a child, I had faith, I believed in God. I can't explain why or how, I just did. Was I born with it? Was it a gift? For sure. I think that is good enough for me. Throughout the years, my faith has grown and I imagine yours has as well.
The blind followers of Jesus who were given their sight, had faith. They couldn't see Jesus either, but they believed He could help, He could make them whole. Wouldn't you love to know the rest of the story? Wouldn't you like to hear about their lives once they could see? I imagine it was much like yours and like mine. My faith is stronger every time God shows up in my life and fixes things. Then, I might find myself going it alone again, feeling like I have it all together. Until...
It is those 'until' moments that grow my faith. In between them I am too self-sufficient. It is like I am blind once again, stumbling through life feeling my way, until. Then once again, God removes my blinders and reveals himself to me. Each time my faith grows until finally I keep my eyes open, I watch for Him in the midst of my hurt and pain. My faith grows in the dark.
