Hidden Agendas and Faithful Followers

Acts 15:1-5 (NIV) Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: "Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved."

People in authority are not necessarily experts.  People in authority are not unquestionably right nor do they always have our best interest at heart.  When we were children we were taught to respect our elders and those who teach and guide us. This message often carries through into our adult life.

As we get older and wiser we begin to recognize the fact that people often have hidden agendas and these agendas can be harmful.  In day to day life, we too may try to manipulate others to come around to our way of thinking.  Selfish human behavior prompts us to push our will on those around us.

We are witnessing that type of thinking with today's reading. Some men were in opposition to the teachings of Jesus that Paul and Barnabas were sharing.  They clung to their former beliefs and did not want to see change take place. But, the disciples were teaching of this change, they were preaching a new way.

Those in opposition to Christianity wanted to maintain former practices and declared the teachings of Moses to be the only way to salvation.  They were denying Christ as Savior. Recognizing how difficult it is to let go of old ways, Paul and Barnabas left and went to Jerusalem to talk it over with the Apostles.  It would seem they were seeking affirmation and guidance.

No matter how sure we are of our facts or beliefs, when challenged it is wise not to dig our heels in too deep. It makes sense to go to those who are wiser and more knowledgeable for affirmation and confirmation.

Whenever we find ourselves in new territory it is smart to make certain we are speaking truth, that we did not misunderstand somewhere along the way.  Once we have this confirmation, we can stand firm in our belief and speak with renewed confidence.
