Did you ever watch This
Old House? Do you remember how amazing to see the poor condition of the houses they
featured and then see the finished product the builders and designers created? Usually it was an awesome sight, one that made me think it would be fun to
try it myself. In reality, it would be daunting just to take one room and
make a new creation out of it, let alone an entire structure.
Sometimes we find
ourselves in similar situations. Our lives have fallen into disarray. We
have allowed our hearts and minds to become so rundown it is doubtful we could
ever rejuvenate them. Weak foundations begin to crumble, walls are cracked and
everything around us is chipped and peeling.
Ezra 5:11 “We are the servants of the God of heaven and
earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago...".
Imagine with me for a
moment what it might be like if we all considered ourselves as servants
of the God of heaven and earth. Envision a picture of peace and
contentment. What a different life we would live. The crumbling footings
of our existence would be beefed up. Broken relationships would be mended and
once lost vitality and purpose would return; or appear for the first time. It
would be good to be you.
Servants give, they are not takers. Jesus came to us as a servant and his message was one of serving others; reaching out and touching the people around Him. He mended broken lives as he walked alongside the weak and defenseless. Once we/I learn to do the same, our life can change too. Just like 'This Old House' presented us with a strong and attractive new structure in which to live, we can rebuild our lives to that end too.
