In You, Lord my God, I put my trust.
I trust in you. Do not let me be put to shame.
Psalm 25:1-2a
Held tightly in a clenched fist, with an ice cream cone in the other hand? Maybe slipping through your fingers as an unexpected gust of wind tries to snatch it from your grip? Maybe you're standing alone; watching it fly out of reach, into the wide open sky. And you aren't sure if you'll ever get it back.
Psalm 25 is a prayer of hope. A prayer that I read, holding on to my balloon for dear life, and say "Yes God! I lift this up to you."
"I trust in you. Do not let me be put to shame." vs. 2a
"Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long." vs. 4-5
"According to your love, remember me, for you, Lord, are good." vs. 7b
Hope can't be dependent on our circumstances. Something fills us with joy and we proudly proclaim, "God is good!" It's easy to find 'hope' in God when the bank is full, the cupboards are filled, the job is steady, the kids are behaving, the marriage is thriving, friendships are growing, the faith life is flourishing, etc.
But what about in the midst of trial or tragedy. Is God still good?
It's in those times that we find ourselves on our knees, desperate for God's hand to save us from whatever we're facing, that hope shines. Even in the pain and the unknowns, despite the fear, we can have confidence in the One who allows the storms to come. Beauty rises from ashes. And hope is always at our fingertips. If you're struggling to hold on to hope, remember that He is for you. And He is faithful.
"Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant." vs. 8-10
