Jeremiah 31:
9-10 They will come with weeping;
they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead them beside streams of water
on a level path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,
and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead them beside streams of water
on a level path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,
and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
“Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
proclaim it in distant coastlands:
proclaim it in distant coastlands:
"He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like
a shepherd.’
The story of the 70 year
captivity of Israel by the Babylonian Empire, is a scary one. The nation of
Israel was overtaken by pagans. Jeremiah prophesied to the people, he warned
them something like this would happen if they did not turn away from their evil
living. The people did not listen and God allowed them to be defeated.
Even through all this, God let them know it would not be
forever; but that in 70 years they would be free to return to their homeland
and begin again. He never stopped loving His people. ‘He who scattered Israel will
gather them
and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’ (Verse 10)
and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’ (Verse 10)
God has done the same for us. Even
though we have been banished from the home we were intended to live forever, He
promises we can return to that place of perfect peace. We only need to believe
and He will gather us up in His loving arms again –upon His triumphant return.
This is a love we cannot begin to understand; so we spend our entire lives fighting it, until one day, the fog lifts and it get clearer. We feel a warm embrace and a gentle touch. When we believe in God, we come to know God is Love and then we can begin to comprehend this Outrageous Loving God who wants only to care for us with His love.
