Psalm 42:1-2
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
Where can I go and meet with God?
The hustle and bustle of everyday life often keeps us distracted. We wonder what we would do without our phones, internet service, or television to keep us informed and entertained. I'm guilty! So much energy is put into to-do lists, kid's activities, work and daily tasks that our minds drift from things of God to things of this Earth. It's only after a burn out that we may find ourselves re-prioritizing and turning back to God as the source of life, peace and rest.
"As the deer pants for streams of water..." This is an image of deep longing. A need to be satisfied, and a thirst to be quenched. "...so my soul pants for you, my God." Do I ache to be so intimately connected with God that my soul pants for Him as a deer pants for water? Does my soul thirst for more of Him, as if I truly believe He holds the source of all that can fill and satisfy?
Psalm 42:8
By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.
With technology at our fingertips, Satan has a powerful yet subtle tool to distract us from the Living Water we should be thirsty for. The void is quickly filled when we stimulate our minds with something. Anything. But just as quickly as we fill our own cups, the emptiness creeps back in leaving us no closer to peace, and definitely no closer to God.
"...a prayer to the God of my life." Such an intimacy so beyond 'making time for God.'
Psalm 42:11
Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
Nothing this world has to offer will leave us feeling satisfied; at least not for long. Technology will progress, times will continue to change, but our God remains the same. Our need for Him remains the same. When my soul is downcast and feeling weak, it doesn't take long to see that I have been trying to fill my cup with everything but Him. Like deer, we will wander from the stream. But God is faithful to quench our thirst each and every time we return. May we know what it means to pant for Him each day, and gather our fill from the eternal Life source!

A good reminder in our busy and often over filled lives.
