This has been quite a chain of events for Our Lord. He shared The Last Supper with His main men, the Disciples. Then He went to the Garden for prayer and quiet time with the Father. The Roman soldiers came to arrest Him.
His good friend Peter, who just swore up and down, his unending loyalty to Jesus, denied Him. Not once, but three times. It only goes downhill from here for Jesus. He was mocked and beaten by the guards and now stands before Pilate for more questioning.
Luke 22:66-70 (NIV) At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief
priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. "If you are the Christ," they
said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I
tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not
answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right
hand of the mighty God." They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He
replied, "You are right in saying I am."
I can't even imagine how alone Jesus must have felt during this time. Not that He didn't know it was going to happen. He was not blindsided by the happenings of the last 24 hours, but He was human,[and God]. His human side must have been in an emotional turmoil and the physical pain--excruciating.
This is the beginning of Holy Week, the beginning of the journey which will take Jesus to the cross and will take us to the foot of the cross. Let us gather there and examine our hearts. It is time to see where we fall short, contemplate how we deny Jesus and confess we turn our back on Him.
