John 19:25-27 (NIV)
Near
the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of
Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When
Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he
said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your
son," and to the disciple,
"Here is your mother." From that time on, this
disciple took her into his home.
This verse has always touched my heart. The words are bubbling with love. It is difficult to imagine what Jesus was feeling as he watched His mother, watching Him as he hung on the cross. As the mother of Jesus, who had full knowledge of His royal birth, it would seem logical she would view him as Son and King.
But, as the mother of a young man falsely accused, her heart must have been filled with conflict and questions. Why? Isn't there another way? Her heart must have been overflowing with memories of Jesus' growing up years. Flashes of His life with her appear in visions of Him at her knee while learning to pray, His childhood permanently engraved on her heart.
Now let's pan to the next scene; here is the Disciple whom He loved, standing nearby. This devoted follower bore a breaking heart. John's friend and mentor, his Savior and his God looked down at him and honored him with the words, "Here is your mother." It is written, "From that time on, this disciple took her into his home."
There is so much love depicted in these precious moments, these last moments together. "For God, so loved the world, He gave is His one and only Son." (John 3:16)
