Putting Down the Sword

"Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war." - Psalm 120:6-7

Anyone in your life come to mind as you read those verses? Maybe a boss, co-worker, sibling, relative, friend, acquaintance, or neighbor?

With so many different personalities, thoughts and opinions, lifestyles and habits, harmony isn't always easy to maintain. Some people clash, and others find themselves using every ounce from within to maintain civility for an afternoon around someone they struggle to be with.

"Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it." - Psalm 34:14

How is it that we are all made in God's image, yet we all display such different characteristics of Him? Sometimes I think God can't help but smile (and shake His head!) at His rambunctious, spirited children. Or that He has a tender heart toward those who are quiet and inward. Just as one husband and one wife may find themselves raising children, all very different from one another, so God does the same.

He is Papa, and we are siblings in Christ; all learning how to get along and grow in relationship despite our differences from one another.

When I look at the picture above, and think about relationships in which I struggle, I see myself as the character in yellow releasing peace, only to be met with the opposite. But those people whom I find challenge with may view the same picture and say the same when it comes to their relationship with me. We are quick to see the faults in another, but not so quick to see them in ourselves. We all think we're the one in yellow, don't we? As Dr. Phil would say, "Perception is reality." ...But we can't all be right.
"For God is not a God of disorder but of peace." - 1 Corinthians: 14:33

Our God truly desires peace. He desires for there to be joy and healthy communion between His children, just as every parent does. For those strained and difficult relationships, it's important that we humble ourselves enough to ask God to reveal the areas where we contribute to the relationship struggle.

We aren't all wearing yellow, all the time.

This week, pray about those relationships. The Good Counselor is ready and willing to help us find healing and mending where needed. If it can't happen within a relationship, we can still work on our own issues. Put down the sword and choose forgiveness.

"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:7
