Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their work in darkness and think, "Who sees us? Who will know?" Isaiah 29:15
What makes a spooky movie even spookier? Is it the darkness, the hidden enemy who lies in wait to grab hold of an ankle through an open stairway? Is it the slight touch on a shoulder as you pass by the dark curtain? Maybe it is the unknown entity crouching in the corner causing goose bumps to appear. Don’t get me started on the dramatic music which accompanies these scenarios either.
I tend to avoid movies like this altogether. There is no joy or excitement for me in being afraid. Shivering in fear while waiting for a frightening thrill, is not my idea of a fun night.
Life is unnerving enough without adding to it. I prefer to experience peace and tranquility in life. There was a time I did not know what tomorrow would bring, a time when each day resembled a scene from a scary movie or book. Ghosts from my past haunted me. Ghouls from the present pursued, making me look over my shoulder every time I tried to move forward.
Then I discovered Jesus and saw the peace He brought to the lives of those who knew Him well. I met a few people who lived in a world where that peace prevailed and I wanted to rent space there and move in. So I did.
The evil lurking in darkness has no chance to scare those who have taken up residence in a loft filled with light.
Back to the scary movies. How many times have we watched scenes where the babysitter opens the basement door, obviously considering stepping into that cob-web filled dungeon? How many times have I silently screamed at her to TURN ON THE LIGHT!
For me, that is what discovering Jesus and embracing His Good News is like. I finally walked into the darkroom and immediately turned on a light. Coming out of the shadows I found new life in a world filled with sunshine. That is now my form of entertainment.Isaiah 29:13-21
