Jesus is the Light
Jesus is the Light
Underground Edinburgh, talk about dark! Our guide and skilled narrator rolled back the centuries with tales of misery and murder in the darkness of this place. Homeless refugees of the Scottish Highland Clearance sought shelter in the caverns beneath the city. The darkness was crushing and consuming. At first sight coming up from this pit, my eyes and spirit seemed to grasp for the light of day.
Jesus Reveals Himself as the Light of the World
At a lamp-lighting celebration focused on God’s salvation, large lamps were set up in the Court of Women, (the outer forecourt of the temples in Jerusalem where women were permitted to enter.) .As we recall John 8:3-6, the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus who had been caught committing adultery, asking him what should be done with her. In the sight of these great lamps, Jesus refers to himself in a most startling way, saying, I am the light of the world. He cuts deep into their accusatory hearts with a challenge to any who is without sin to cast the first stone. Then He “the light of the world” speaks forgiveness and direction to the woman - “neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.”
How beautiful are words of the prophet Isaiah - The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory – Isaiah 60:19.
How beautiful are the words of John the revelator - The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp - Revelation 21:23
Jesus, our light - out life!
John 8:12-20
