Pass the Salt

Have you ever met a Christian that you were drawn to? There was just something about their personality and disposition that drew you in. And after spending time with them, you wanted more. More of whatever it was they had to offer. Even if you couldn't quite put your finger on it, you knew they had something you didn't. And whatever that was, you wanted it too! Jesus would refer to them as 'salty'. That 'irresistible, draws-you-in, makes-you-thirst, can't-get-enough' is what he wants from every believer. In fact, it's what he calls us to:
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its taste, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot." (Matthew 5:13)
In Matthew 5, Jesus called His disciples 'the salt of the earth'. To understand what Jesus meant, let's talk salt. Salt is a seasoning. It brings an otherwise bland flavor to life. Salt disinfects. It is a natural cleaning product, kills bacteria, and aids wounds. Salt preserves. Something that would otherwise go bad will keep fresh when preserved with salt. Jesus goes on to say, 'if the salt loses its taste, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything'. When salt is contaminated with other minerals, its flavor is weakened. What good is salt if it isn't salty? Jesus' warning here is that we are set apart as the earth's seasoning. If we are contaminated by sin, unbiblical truths, or worldly lifestyles, our flavor will dull and ultimately we are useless for the gospel. Jesus goes on to say:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)

The salt of the earth and light of the world. A distinct taste that others will crave, and ultimately lead them to a thirst for Christ, the Living water. A light in the midst of darkness; set out for everyone to see, utilize and benefit from. That's how Jesus sees us, and how he wants to use us. If salt isn't applied, it's useless. If light is covered up, it's a waste. May Jesus fill us with courage to be the salt and light of the earth. May the world crave Him by their interactions with us. May they rise from the darkness of sin and into the light of forgiveness and redemption. That is Life on Mission.

Points to Ponder:
1. How does Jesus call Christians to Season, Disinfect and Preserve others?
2. Are you feeling salty or bland? Light or dull?
3. This week, ask God to reveal areas where you may be contaminated, in order to better represent Christ to the lost.
