Life’s greatest sorrow is
the loss of a beloved one. Words
cannot comfort as permanent abandonment is what the heart hears and fears.
Jesus had been with his
disciples' three years, time enough to form sacred bonds of love and friendship
among them. He had taught them, comforted
them and loved them as He walked alongside them. Their hearts were not prepared to consider
that He would leave them.
As they heard His words, "with hearts of little
children," they were afraid of losing Him forever. Jesus assured them that they would not be left
to fend for themselves. A supernatural
Helper and Comforter, the Holy Spirit would come to them soon after His
departure.
Jesus was saying "I'm
going away to My Father, yet I'll come to you in the form of My Spirit to dwell
within you." Paul affirmed Jesus’ words to the Corinthians, and to all believers. “Do you not know that you are a temple of God
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?"
(1 Corinthians 3:16)
Jesus said to the disciples, "In that day you
will know." (John 14:20) Understandably, the mystery of relationship among Father, Son and Holy Spirit
was incomprehensible to them until Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came as a
mighty rushing wind! (Acts 2:1)
As believers we have a
wonderful promise of two Comforters, the Holy Spirit of God within us and the
Son of God in heaven. "If
anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the
righteous." (1 John: 2-1)
Jesus' promise extended
beyond the sending of the Holy Spirit. His
words beautifully culminated the message of comfort: "that He may be with
you forever.” (John 14:16) Not only would the Holy Spirit come to dwell
with the disciples and with all believers,
but also He would never leave.
Nothing can take the
place of the Holy Spirit's work in the life of a believer. Through Him we are
"heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:17)
