10 Disciples behind Closed Doors

Gospel of John20:19-25

Once I hid someone in harm’s way overnight in my home. The anticipation of danger at my door was heart-pounding until the first light of morning.

Jesus’ disciples were in hiding as Roman imperialism and the treachery of the Great Sanhedrin in conspiracy had crucified Jesus.

Without sight of the risen Christ, the empty tomb remained a mystery to the disciples as Mary Magdalene told her unfathomable story.

Barricaded doors were no obstacle to the risen Christ as He first appeared to the disciples. 10 of the 12 were holed up in secret, immobilized by grief and fear. Judas was dead by his own hand, and scripture gives no account of Thomas’ absence.

Soon after, Jesus appeared again to the disciples with a greeting of peace. In spite of Judas betrayal, Peter’s denial, and abandonment of the rest, He declared to them His peace and forgiveness.

Jesus offered His nail scarred hands for examination, “see Thomas, my hands and my side. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”  John 20: 27-29

As Easter was celebrated over the world two days ago, Christians were hunted and killed, with survivors hiding in fear.  We wonder how believers face such a time, how we would face such a time?

“When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.  Luke 12:11-12

Victory over death was won at Calvary.  Ours is the promise of eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ.
