What is a Disciple?

"The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them." (Matthew 21:6)

A popular definition of a disciple is one who does the things Jesus did and says the things Jesus said. This verse from Matthew 21 adds a bit more to the meaning; a disciple does the things Jesus said and says the things Jesus did. This twist might be confusing but sit on a bit.

As a follower of Jesus I want to do what He did in my daily living.  I long to be close to the Father, I want to build on my relationship with God every day. I want to say the things Jesus said; my words must be filled with love and grace as Jesus' were.

Let's take this a bit further. God's Word is filled with instructions and guidance for daily living. When I am in a jam I turn to scripture and seek an escape from my predicament. By doing the things Jesus said to do, I can be closer to the Father. My obedience to His will is reflected in my life. My obedience allows for His plan to take place when I most need it.

The flip side to this is to say the things Jesus did. This means to tell the story, to spread the Good News. Sharing the Gospel is one way and probably the most important, but I can't stop there.  I need to tell my story of how Jesus' life and his Word have changed me.

Part one of the Good News is the story of Jesus' love and His sacrifice of death on the cross, for us.  Part two is the Good News in my own life.  The story of Jesus in me and how that changes everything.

Matthew 21:1-11
