This
is a divine command – “Be
still before the Lord and wait patiently
for him; do not fret when
people succeed in their ways, when they carry out
their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.” Psalm 37:7-8
The
definition of fretting is to be made rough on the surface, rubbed or worn away.
The word fret is closely akin to the word friction and an indication of the absence
of the anointing oil of the grace of God. So well I have known at
the worst of times, that my heart is restless until I am “fretless” depending
on Him alone.
Fretting,
worry and anger are hard on our health. This is not in keeping with God’s health
care plan for us. We are to remain calm and cool in the anointing of His
Spirit. "Commit your
way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this." Psalm 37:5. It is a
scriptural principle that spiritual forces cannot work while earthly forces are
active. Fretting is an obstacle to the
working of the Spirit.
When
Psalm 37 was written, evil was as prevalent as it is today. People were tyrannized
by hatred, prejudice and violence. We
are told not to become unduly vexed, to remain anchored in the Lord trusting in
His love and light.
Tomorrow’s bridge is a dangerous thing to attempt to cross
on our own.

Said the
Robin to the Sparrow:
“I should really like to know
Why these anxious human beings
Rush about and worry so?”
Said the Sparrow to the Robin:
“Friend, I think that it must be
That they have no Heavenly Father
Such as cares for you and me.”
