Life in the Spirit

Where did it go wrong – how did we fall and forfeit the Garden of God?  We live with primordial memories of Eden, searching for the lost pathway Home.

(What Satan put into the heads of our remote ancestors was that they could be “like gods” – could set up on their own as if they had created themselves, be their own masters and invent some sort of happiness for themselves outside God and apart from God.  Out of that hopeless attempt has come nearly all that we call “human history,” money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery-- the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.)
The Business of Heaven Daily Readings, C.S. Lewis

"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law."  Galatians 5:16-18

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23

Notice that these are fruit of the Spirit, and not fruits of the Spirit. We cannot say “I like this one, I am good at patience but not so good at joy, or I have a lot of love but I have no faithfulness.” This fruit grows on one tree that arose from the stump of the Root of Jesse - Christ Jesus.

"Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."  Galatians 5:24

(They wanted “as we say,” to call their souls their own, but that means to live a lie, for our souls are not in fact our own.)  The Problem of Pain, C.S. Lewis
