Surely we have all - (or known someone who has
struggled with the inability to resolve debt in a timely way.) Stress and
feelings of failure are often the result.
Debtors prison is not a thing of the past. As
a nurse case manager, I involved legal counsel for those unable to
pay debts, (frequently child support) due to physical or mental disability. Warrants were served, and sometimes incarceration imposed.
For those physically and mentally able (who
live by the Word,) responsibility for resolution of debt is not negotiable. As
we practice faithful stewardship, we experience God’s rich blessings.
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse,
that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much
blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” Malachi 3:10
Proverbs 3:27 condemns refusal to pay a
debt. “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power
of your hand to do it.”
Delay in payment of debt can turn
charity into cruelty. If we can help someone in need we must do it now – not in
the future. Love is present tense!
This rule of wisdom taught by King Solomon
applies to bills, debts, dues, wages, taxes, charity, family support, giving,
and any similar obligations. If we owe or could help anyone, and have the means
to do so, we should do it today!
Praise God, we are free from our greatest
debt! Jesus paid our debt for all eternity. Then he
said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." Luke 23:42-43
