Singing as Ministry
2 Chronicles 10:18-22
Scripture is full of encouragement to 'make a joyful noise to the Lord.'
-David embarrassed his wife, Michal, with his singing and dancing (2 Samuel 6)
-The Psalms are FULL of shouts of joy, singing, praises to God (take a look at Psalm 149 as a great example)
-The Lord commanded the people to walk around the city of Jericho 6 times and then the 7th time to sound the trumpets - and he promised them he would give them the city. Again, the power of music (and obeying the Lord) Joshua 6
-When Mary learns she is pregnant with Jesus, she is full of the holy spirit and sings praises to God. (Luke 1)
-Paul & Silas find themselves in prison, and instead of sinking into despair, they sing God's praise. The jailer is so amazed by this that he and his family become Christians (Acts 16).
-Revelation is filled with images of the angels singing praises to God. Revelation 6:9-11 paints a majestic picture of praise and worship.
God is worthy of our worship. Singing and praising him are not just jobs for our choir. All of us, whether we have musically trained voices or one that can't hold a tune in a bucket, need to rejoice in our God through music. It is a key part of our worship.
In today's passage, King Jehoshaphat recognized the power of worship through song, and "he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him in holy attire, as they went before the army." (2 Chronicles 20:21). They went BEFORE the army. They were IMPORTANT.
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of music. Help me to worship you through song, and to give you thanks and praise. You alone are worthy of worship. Amen.
