Bind Up the Broken Hearted

She was standing on the sidewalk crying when I got out of the car. My flight had been delayed. My dad had passed an hour before I arrived. How could I comfort my mother through my own sadness?

Now at another time - she was waiting to comfort me as I got out of the car crying. My heart was shattered as I learned of my son’s passing. How could she comfort me through the sadness of seeing her child in great pain, and the loss of her beloved grandson? Neither of us could completely relate to each other’s pain, as she had never lost a child and I not a husband of a life’s journey. We could however relate and cling to our faith in God, knowing we would be with husband and child again in the Father’s house.

As Jesus went to visit His friends, He was confronted with the death of Lazarus. His response was simple. His response was natural. His response was human. “He wept.” John 11:35

I ask why the King of kings and the Lord of lords would cry?” He who holds the power of life in His hands cried at the heart break of death, the wound that never heals.

Earthmaker and His Troubadour sat down on the outer rim of space and looked at our planet. Earthmaker held it to His ear. "They’re crying Troubadour," He said. "They cry so hopelessly.” He gave the tiny planet to His Son who also held it to His ear. “Year after weary year they all keep crying. They seem born to weep and die.” Then with his nail He scraped the atmosphere and both of them beheld the planet bleed. Earthmaker set earth spinning on its way and said, “give Me your vast infinity my Son. l will wrap it in a bit of clay." And so, the Son became a one of us.  (Calvin Miller, The Singer)

Let us also be comforters, and comfort-able as the hands of Jesus binding up the broken-hearted in love, compassion, and tenderness.
