Never have I read John 17, (the heartfelt
prayer of Jesus) without tears. His work
is complete, all but the final hour. He
has passed God’s message on. Now there remains only death, and the glory He set
aside to become one of us. He knows His disciples and followers will be left
bereft in a hostile world. I empathize with their grief, I want to comfort them
and to comfort Him. I want to say, “we will be okay, we will follow You all the way Home Lord!"
Jesus prays to be glorified with the glory that was His
through all eternity. He prays for His own to be with Him to see His glory. His deepest desire was to glorify His Father, to reveal the Person of God, the
perfection of His character.
Jesus’
prays for oneness of His disciples, for their sanctification through God’s
Word, the truth that measures all others. Christian unity cuts across time and
space. Believers are united in Christ, bound by strong eternal cords to one
another. Jesus said the full expression of this oneness would cause people to
know He is God’s anointed one, loving all the people of the world even as God
loves Him.
Jesus prayed with concern and intercession for
His disciples, for all who have come to Him throughout the generations that
followed. Jesus prayed for each one of us, for you and for
me. We are covered by His blood and blanketed by His prayer.
Jesus looked beyond the cross. He saw the glory of
finishing His atoning work along with His Father’s. He saw that He would bring
many sons and daughters to glory, as all who belong to Him would receive
eternal life. (Hebrews 2:10)
Thanks be to God!
