Hunger

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.

Matthew 5:6

Oh, Lord, I long to be a child of yours who hungers and thirsts for righteousness.  Too often my hungers are self-centered.  I hunger for a better job, or a nicer car, or a new kitchen.  Or 50-yard-line seats for any Ohio State game....Oh, Lord, help me in my shallow, self-centered world, to truly hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Here are some verses to meditate on as you pray for a heart that fills with joy:

Psalm 42:1   As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God

Psalm 63:1   O God, you are my God; I will seek you diligently.  My soul thirsts for you; my flesh longs for you as in a dry and weary land without water.

Psalm 73:38  Whom have I in heaven but You?  And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.

John 6:35   Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst."

It's just not fair!  How many times have you felt that you got something you didn't deserve?
Or how many times have you said that when a 6 year old child is diagnosed with cancer, or someone drives left of center and causes a fatal accident?

In both circumstances, Jesus says those who thirst for righteousness will be satisfied

What is my highest, strongest desire?  If I died today, would I be dissatisfied with the way I lived my life?  Would I be dissatisfied with the results of my life?  Better yet, would God be dissatisfied with my life?

Lord, my thoughts are not your thoughts.  Take my life, Lord, and let it be consecrated to you.  Help me to thirst for your righteousness.  Amen.
