John 1:14-18
Have you ever bought a candy bar from a vending machine and can’t believe your good luck when two drop instead of just one? What do you do with the extra? Do you eat both or share it with a friend?
More typically, what happens when the machine doesn’t give you what you want? Do you kick it and curse and demand what you paid for?
While I don’t advocate thinking of Jesus as a fully stocked vending machine, I must admit sometimes I do. Without even putting in my quarters, I push the button and pray for grace to fall on me. And you know what - it does!
In today’s passage, John tells us Jesus is full of grace and truth (v. 14) and Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given (v. 16).
Jesus’ grace and truth are always there when we’re hungry. A normal vending machine gives us a drink or a snack that satisfies us for a little bit, but when Jesus dispenses his grace and truth it fills us for a lifetime.
We really don’t need to keep pushing the button for more because once we receive Jesus, we’re good. But we keep asking and He keeps giving because maybe when our human brain/body/heart realizes it’s full, we’ll start sharing the overflow with others.
Lord, thank you for sending Jesus to fill us with your grace and truth. May we in turn share what we have with others, so they too can experience your glory. Amen
