It’s hard to find a comfort level with people who have a subtle
and fine discontentment about them, always in search of something more. No
matter our efforts to make them happy, it is often not enough.
How much is enough? Whether we live in a place of plenty
or not, we sometimes seek unhealthy ways of filling the God-shaped hole in our
hearts. When we look to the Lord for contentment, for our sense of peace and
well-being, His goodness and love bring refreshment and contentment. “You have formed us for Yourself, and our
hearts are restless till they find rest in You.” Saint Augustine, The Confessions
“There is a time for
everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:” Ecclesiastes3:1. Contentment enables us to grow where God
has planted us. We are free to enjoy the seasons of our lives, our work, our
family, our friendships, in good times and hard times. We are God-designed to live
in the world without undue worry, to experience pleasure and joy.
Philippians 4:12-13 describes Paul’s response to life: “I know what it is to be in need,
and I know what it is to have plenty.” His relationship with God superseded his
circumstances. He rejoiced in times of
extreme hardship as his focus was eternity-centered.
“He has made everything beautiful in its
time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no
one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11
It seems that (Solomon the author of
Ecclesiastes,) could have penned the words to Bobby McFerrin’s “be happy song.”
To be happy in our Father’s care and design for our lives is to experience
contentment.
"Do not be
afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”Luke 12:32
