Reading today’s passage made me think of the poem The Road Not Taken, but I must admit - the romanticized version frequently referred to as The Road Less Traveled.
When we come to a fork in the road, how do we know which way to go? For today’s sake, let’s say one path follows the letter of the law, while the other follows the spirit.
The letter path has been cleared for safe travel, while the spirit path appears trickier to follow.
Often, we rely on man-made laws to make our path straight and show us the way to go. Life seems much more do-able this way.
For those not in a personal relationship with Jesus, the spirit path can seem intimidating and unsure. Heck, even people IN a personal relationship with Jesus stop and ask themselves, “Am I doing the right thing? This is harder than I thought. Maybe if I’d chosen differently, life would be easier.”
The thing to keep in mind is that if you’re doing what is faithful, then you’re doing what is right. If you’re doing what God intended – loving Him and loving each other, then you’re on the right path.
I’m not saying your path won’t contain pitfalls, but that’s when you call on the wisdom of Psalm 143:
8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I entrust my life.
9 Rescue me from my enemies, LORD,
for I hide myself in you.
10 Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
lead me on level ground.
So, when you decide to take the path of the spirit (i.e., the road less traveled by), God’s intervention will make all the difference.
Sorry, Robert Frost for any misinterpretations.
