Nathan Establishes Credibility

2 Samuel 7:3-13

Without faith and spiritual vision, unfulfilled dreams can haunt our hearts.  As we relinquish with trust our personal dreams, we are assured that God-inspired dreams will finally be fulfilled.

Nathan must tell David that God will not allow him to fulfill his dream of building the Temple. This sacred appointment will be given to his son Solomon, a man of peace without blood on his hands as his warrior father.  1 Chronicles 22:7

David’s disappointment is followed by a promise that exceeds anything he could have asked. His response is a great outpouring of love and praise. God will build him a house, “a dynasty that will be forever!”

On this promise rests a hope that runs through the remainder of the Old Testament, the hope of a Messiah. When Jesus came “born in Bethlehem,” of the house and lineage of David, the prophesy was fulfilled. The angel tells Mary, “the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:32-33

Moses too was not allowed to fulfill a personal hope. As he had struck the rock in the wilderness in anger, it was given to Joshua to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land. Deuteronomy 31:23

God provides for the fulfillment of His plans. We can trust that unfulfilled dreams will not die when God is the architect.

“Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land."

Martin Luther King, Jr. (I have a Dream – April 3, 1968)
