Not Seeing Is Believing

John 14:15-21

Imagine someone who advocates for you at all times; a friend who’s always looking out for you, a counselor listening to your every need and pointing you in the right direction. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?! Well, we have that in the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit serves as one-third of the Trinity, but he’s often overlooked. Maybe it’s because of what John writes in verse 17 “the world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.” That’s the thing about mankind, we need to see it to believe it. It’s so hard to put your faith in something you can’t see.

Though we’ve never personally seen Jesus, we know he was a flesh and blood man. God knew Jesus had to come to prepare a way for the Spirit – to turn hearts so that believers could truly believe. When the apostles were filled with the Spirit then they could carry on Jesus’ work.

I can hear Jesus saying to his friends, “I’m leaving but someone else is coming to listen and give counsel. People will have trouble believing because they can’t see him. I’ll need you to let them know he’s real because he lives in you, just as I do. Keep up my work and I’ll always be around. I’ll never abandon you.”

If we allow the Spirit to fill us then we become part of that glorious circle of faith “I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you” (v. 20). We become one with the Trinity. If we only believe in two of the three elements, then we’re really missing out. It’s like making a s’mores and leaving out the marshmallow, that sticky goodness that holds it all together. Now who wants that?!

Come Holy Spirit, come!
