I know something of the cost of being uprooted as my dad's company transferred him often. My seventh grade school year was divided by three states, Texas, Tennessee and Kansas. I watched my grandmother wipe tears away as our train left the station.
Abraham’s lifestyle was a pilgrimage, transferred several times and
often lacking a settled home. The Lord had said to Abram,
“Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the
land I will show you.” It was one of history’s great moments
when the caravan set out for Haran; laden camels towering over slow-footed
sheep, the bleating of the flocks broken by the wail of parting women.
By faith Abraham
obeyed when he was called, and he went out, not knowing where he was going. Hebrews 11:8
God’s blessings are inextricably connected to our obedience!
One of the greatest challenges
we face in following Christ is fear of the unknown. We want to know in advance
the outcome of our obedience and where He is taking us.
“I will make you into a
great nation, and I will bless you; I will
make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those
who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through
you.” Genesis 12:2-3
Over thousands of years and
against all odds, Israel survives and thrives as God’s covenant of peace with
them is never-ending.
“Our God, You call
us to ventures for which we can’t see the ending paths and unknown perils. Give
us faith to go forward with courage, not knowing where we go, but only that You
are in charge and your love for us is never-ending.”
