Wise Counselor

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2)

This verse reveals that the Holy Spirit was here from the beginning, actively involved in the creation of the world. The image of the "the Spirit of God hovering over the waters", is beautiful. And how easy it is to read right past these words, never noticing.

It is easy to miss the Holy Spirit's role in our own lives. We know we receive this third person of the Trinity upon baptism, but do we understand what that means? Do we embrace the difference having the Holy Spirit makes in our lives every day? It is said that wisdom comes with age. While to some degree this is true, it is life experiences which mature us. It is the Holy Spirit who instills wisdom as a result of those life experiences, when we turn to Him.

Once I started to cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, which included reading the Word and studying it, the Holy Spirit became real and an intimate part of this relationship with Jesus.

Now, my daily prayer includes the plea, "Come Holy Spirit," for I know that every day I need the loving guidance and direction from this third person of the Trinity. He convicts me when I am heading down a dangerous path. He encourages me when I need to hear a word of love and grace. He is all we need to live faithful lives.  Come Holy Spirit!
