Off contract for a few
weeks I stepped into a neighborhood Catholic church for morning mass. I wanted
to worship with other believers. As a Protestant visitor, I sat at the back of
the church and didn’t go forward to receive communion. One morning after
service the priest welcomed me. He invited me to join in communion with one
simple requirement, “if you are a believer in Jesus Christ.”
The weight of everyday sin and
failure is common to all believers. Not fully comprehending or accepting the "unspeakable gift" of
God’s grace, we leave the communion call hungry for the “living bread and the cup
of redemption.” Jesus called this
cup "the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” Luke 22:20. The
Apostle Paul called it, “the cup of blessing, the cup of the Lord,” 1 Corinthians 10:16-22.
Jesus’ final prayer in the
garden was for all who would believe in Him, (for you and for me.) The miracle
of intimate communion comes through brokenness; broken places, broken people
and the brokenness of Jesus’ body and bloodshed.
Come to the Table all! Jesus is
waiting there for us.
